NOTE: Not to be confused with the entirely different 5.2% bottled Augustinian Ale which is almost exclusively exported to the United States.
A wonderfully smooth drinking premium beer, with a hint of crystal malt. The late addition of Styrian Goldings in the boil lends the beer a continental flavour. Originally brewed to celebrate the 750th anniversary of the founding of the Augustinian priory in Clare, the original home of Nethergate.

Soft malty aroma, a little nutty, some sweet esters. Beautifully rich malty body, nutty, fruity esters. A touch of soft bitterness, a little earthy and herbal, a bit nutty and twiggy - lovely right to the bottom.

Cask @ Beer Shack, Burnley. Copper-gold with a creamy-smooth head. Has a lightly sweetened aroma and taste that’s mostly sugary but there’s just a hint of fruit. It’s smoothish texture feels nice in the palate.

UPDATED: JAN 7, 2014 Cask @ Bedford Arms, Bedford. Copper/tan with a fair bit of head. Faint aroma of honey and citrus with a trace of undefinable grain. Taste is sour/bitter with an astringent bitter aftertaste. Passable but not all that exciting.

Cask @ The Willow Walk. The pour’s a deep amber color with a small head. The nose is standard caramel, light twig, some hints of red berry. The taste is much the same. Bubblegum sweetness, strong caramel, a bit of toasted tobacco leaf. Dry finish. Light body, soft carbonation. Overall, a really boring beer. There’s no margin for error with bitters. This misses the mark!
