4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Brownish black porter, tastes of liquorice, caramel with woody/smoke overtones. Intensely satisfying. Note that it is often sold under ’Growler Brewery’ imagery although Nethergate remains the brewery name.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask from The Ivory Peg, Chelmsford. Dark brown, with quite strong roasted biscuit aroma. Enjoyable, though was served a little too cold which may have affected the appreciation of the beer as have had this better before, elsewhere. May re-rate after next time.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask at The Maypole, Cambridge. Golden brown pour with a broken white head. Fruity aroma with a smooth bitter malty taste. Lovely palate. A super ale and probably better cask than bottled.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Handpull at Southampton Arms. Ruby pour, small tan frothy head. Nutty caramel and nougat aroma, a little sweet. Taste follows, a bit of tart treacle, not much alcohol. Not sure if this wants to be a brown ale or an old ale - a bit sour, malty, mild carbonation, fairly quick finish, slightly sour malty aftertaste. Not bad, not sure what to think.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pint at Wetherspoons Gateshead. Mahoghany with a tan head malt loaf aroma, which persists and develops on the palate. Full bodied, not over sweet, creamy mouth feel, and a generous finish. Lovely stuff.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Jan 2007 from BA: This beer is in Roger Protz’s, 300 Beers to try before you Die, book. Righty so (unlike some others I will not mention).
I had this pint in a Wetherspoon’s pub, Birmingham, England (early Saturday night 13 Jan 2007).
Dark Mahogany in colour with an off white head, this beer named in honour of the brewers dog, is a serious Porter in looks as well as in its taste.
Intense malty, caramel, almost chocolate aroma, which carries on into the taste and mouthfeel.
The cask version is 5.0%, the bottles I believe are 5.5%, I will try a bottle if I ever see one and drink the cask where ever I see it!
