COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular. A dark roasty ale.
Based on a 1750's recipe from the old Taylor Walker brewery for a mild with corriander. Launched in 1988 without the corriander as an Old Ale. The corriander version is sold as Umbel Magna. In 1994 the style was changed to a Porter. In 1998 sugar was removed from the recipe and the abv was dropped from 5.5% to 5%.
Ingredients: Maris Otter, Crystal, Black malts and Wheat Flour; Challenger hops.

Cask at The Green Dragon, Leek (JDW) A deep ruby brown colour with a thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel, some burnt toast, slight chocolate and subtle spicy hops. Taste of roasted malts, burnt toast, some caramel, slight chocolate, a little smoke and subtle spicy hops. Medium bodied and soft carbonation. A dry, burnt malt bitterness in the finish. An interesting porter, started quite sweet and ended dry, a decent burnt malt and soft hop combo in this.

At local Spoons. Dark brown with orange highlights. Rich creamy tan head. Some good smooth & earthy toasty bitterness and reasonable length. Structurally sound. Pretty good really and as I kast remember it about 10 years ago.

Cask at The Water House (JDW), Durham, £2.05/pint. Dark ruby brown beer with a smooth, slightly bubbly cream head. The aroma is pleasant with sweet malt and light caramel and floral tones. The flavour is malt-driven with rich, sweet caramel and toffee, as well as smoky, toasty character and a good, crisp, bitter bite. A real winter warmer.

(Cask at O’Connell’s, Tampere, 20150808) The beer poured clear and dark brown. Its head was medium sized, dense, nearly white and it lasted long. Aroma had toasted malts, sweetness and earth. Palate was medium bodied with low carbonation. Flavours were toasted malts, earth, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste had earth and bitterness. A very watery brew and the finish was almost unpleasant.

A dark ale. Looks a bit like cola. Hardly any head. Thin and tastes very syrupy. Quite sweet ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
