3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Sampled on draught at the John Baird, Muswell Hill. A dark brown colour with reddish tints. Foamy tan head but only soft carbonation. Aroma of fresh bread and milk chocolate. The taste is of dark fruit cake, with hints of brown sugar and mild liquorice. Lingering bitter finish. A good dark ale. Definitely not a porter.

Cask. Pours dark brown with ruby notes. Thin lace top. Aroma dates and malt. Tastes rich with a mild fruitcake quality and lingering licorice. There’s a bit of the Old Growler in all of us.

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Cask at The Angel, Islington as ’Nethergate Old Growler’, 5%. Very dark brown, still, dense foamy tan head endures. Aroma is light and airy up-front, some bread and chocolate as the glass drains. Body is light, smooth, soft carbonation. Taste is tangy and spicy, burnt cake, rum sweetness, dry into the finish with a little booze showing up. Slow drinking and spicy. Grew on me. This is very much an old ale, not a porter as stated.

Cask at The Green Dragon, Leek (JDW) A deep ruby brown colour with a thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel, some burnt toast, slight chocolate and subtle spicy hops. Taste of roasted malts, burnt toast, some caramel, slight chocolate, a little smoke and subtle spicy hops. Medium bodied and soft carbonation. A dry, burnt malt bitterness in the finish. An interesting porter, started quite sweet and ended dry, a decent burnt malt and soft hop combo in this.

At local Spoons. Dark brown with orange highlights. Rich creamy tan head. Some good smooth & earthy toasty bitterness and reasonable length. Structurally sound. Pretty good really and as I kast remember it about 10 years ago.
