UPDATED: DEC 11, 2007 Cask (Live and Let Live, Cambridge)
Dark, nearly black, red tinges. Sweet coffee aroma. Rich raisin and coffee taste. Pleasant warming and friendly taste. Quite fantastic. Not noticably corriandery, but does have a certain spicy je ne sais quoi.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: JAN 2, 2008 Cask, Turf Tavern, Oxford. A re-rate. Ruby brown, nice dense tan head. Coriander aroma is very forward here, with notes of cinnamon and chocolate. Soft milk chocolate flavor, mint and a little spice. An unusual combination of flavors that isn’t something I would have mixed, but has something interesting about it.
Previous rating: Gravity, Masons Arms, Oxford. Caramel brown, frothy off-white head. Fudge, cardamon and ginger aromas, pine. Minty flavor, coffee brewed with not hot enough water, slightly old chocolate. Thin. An interesting aroma falls away to a rather lackluster flavor and follow-through. Disappointing. 3/3/5/2/11

(Cask at Wenlock Arms, London, 7 Aug 2007) Black colour with brief beige head. Roasted, fruity nose with spicy notes of fresh coriander and coffee. Roasted, fruity taste with wild berries and spicy coriander notes. Long bitter-sweet finish. Medium body. Strangely enough the balance between cold coffee and fresh coriander actually works. Quite nice.

Cask, CAMRA Great British Beer Festival. Not quite like any other porter I’ve tried, if this is a 1750 recipe as advertised I see why it was so popular then. Attractive black body but no head to set that off. Aroma is licorice and malt, ginger and coriander, the best aroma I’ve sampled on any beer, absolutely gorgeous; I think the convex glass helped. Taste is as above, beautifully complex yet not too sharp, firm mouthfeel works for a porter but doesn’t match the excellence of the flavour. Best porter I’ve tried, absolutely gorgeous.

Cask, gravity dispense at Woodford Beer Festival at The Duke, Woodford, Northants, 25-05-07. Pours dark brown, some spiciness in the aroma which also had a slightly burnt note. Tasted sticky, some toffee, some spices, nice malty balance, very good beer.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Im imagining this needs a good cellaring, and wetherspoons wont have done that. Aroma is roasty and spicey but a bit minimal. Taste is similar i can find the corriander but it seems out of place and altogether a bit nothing of a beer.

A Mes rate:
Cask from ’Spoons @ Baker Street. WOW! Spice herb vegetable and malty porter nose with a hint of baby powder and puppies. Honestly. Black / red / brown colour. Most interesting. Porterish in the mouth with some lovely liquorice and dark malt and obvious ginger, coriander and other spices. Love hate I’m sure but I love it.
