dchmela (496), Orlando, Florida, USA May 10, 2008 Courtesy MrManning. Can. Pours a chesnut brown with a thick white head. Roasted grain, some malty sweetness and a slightly metallic aroma. Taste is roasted grain, slightly thin with a porter like creaminess. Finishes a little bitter and creamy. Not bad for a can. austinpowers (2813), New York, New York, USA May 7, 2008 Can from Summerhill LCBO, Toronto. Thin, bitter, where’s the beer?!? This bummed me out, and left me wondering why no one in this province seems to put malt in their beer! A bit nutty. yarry (329), Waterdown, Ontario, Canada Apr 29, 2008 473ml can, 5.5% a/v
Pours a somewhat bland brown colour with a thin tan head. Smells of dark fruits and sugar and some slight smokiness. The taste is smokey, coffee and some tart apples on the aftertaste. Interesting, but strange. Glouglouburp (1645), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Apr 13, 2008 In short: Some kind of fruity kind-of-English-Strong-Ale calling itself a Brown Ale. Decent.
How: Can, 473ml, fresh (probably 1 to 2 months old). Graciously given by Tupalev, thanks a lot Jeff.
The look: Almost clear dark ruby body with a medium beige head
In long: Nose of burning wood and raisin pie. Taste is very fruity with an unusual mix of prunes and apple juice blending with some smooth toffee. Very nice mouthfeel. A little creamy pecan as it warms up. The first sip was a WTF? But by the end of the can I was actually enjoying it. As a brown-ale it misses the target but as some kind of English Strong Ale this is pretty drinkable. An ok everyday beer although they should really make a stronger 5W30 beer for cold winter days.
Illuminatus (76), Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada Mar 25, 2008 473mL can from the LCBO. Pours dark brown, small, off-white head. Aroma is somewhat thin, smells of caramelly malt. Good mouthfeel, just the right level of carbonation. Flavour is on the sweet side of malty, with a very slight fruity note, and lightly hopped. Good, but not as good as Neustadt’s newly-reformulated lager.
