matt7215 (943), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Jan 28, 2008 Updated: Mar 13, 2008473 ml can. pours dark brown with a medium sized tan head. almost no aromas but what was there was caramel malt. good flavour for a light bodied brown. caramel malts with some gritty graininess. very drinkable and enjoyable if your not feeling up to a challenge or if you feel like drinking 12 473 ml cans. will buy it again. JesseM (661), Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada Jan 25, 2008 473ml can from the LCBO. Pours a deceptively dark colour, but appears translucent ruby when held up to the light. Aroma: Uh, not so good, a weird mess of nauseating sweetness. Taste: Remarkably better than the aroma! Bitter, but with some nice graininess to it, and some sweeter, chocolate like elements, but as I drink more of it, it seems to get bizarrely cloying and unpleasant. I have to space out my sips. Not bad, but, kind of weird to me. Not at all what I was expecting. JohnBarleycorn (390), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jan 7, 2008 Can. Playful name is one of the more creative attempts the Ontario craft movement has to offer. Medium-dark brown appearance delivers on oily expectations. Nice, dark aromas of chocolate, light-roast coffee and a quality malt backbone. Drinkable palate is nice and rich. Healthy dose of chocolate in the flavour along with berryfruit, and a layered finish of bitter coffee, dark malt and slight nuttiness. The fruit accents really help this beer stand out as a better-than-average dark. Will buy again. mabel (2530), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 29, 2007 [757-20071013] Tap @ West 50 (Mississauga, ON). Malty aroma has a bit of booze and yeast. Clear, amber brown body with a long-lasting creamy off-white head. Malty chocolate mousse malt flavour has a nutty finish. Medium-full body. Interesting to try. VeloVampire (483), Parkdale, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 20, 2007 Updated: Oct 24, 2008I deleted my old rating of this because I’m fairly certain it was rated from an infected batch and with the release of this beer in cans, the quality control/freshness issue seems to be moot. So....473 ml can - pours a clear dark brown with a fairly decent sized white head that lingers and laces nicely. Big malty aroma, caramel, some smokiness, and a hint of sour apple and raisin. After these scents, you expect big things in the taste, but that is where the beer stumbles a bit - decent enough brown ale, but nothing amazing. Too watery though there is a slight bitterness in the finish - good. The body needs just a bit more....oomph. Very sugary. Slight alcohol presence in the finish. They’re on the right track - this one just needs a bit of tweaking to make it truly exceptional.
Update: on tap at Mitzi’s sister - superbly fresh and nicely balanced. Less sweet than before and with a good bitterness in the finish. Body seems a bit filled out. Much improved, or perhaps the tap version is fresher and therefore preferable to the can. A beguiling brew that seems to change by the batch, but when it’s on, it’s ON. Good stuff. BigSquid (9), Merimbula, Australia does not count Dec 9, 2007 I really enjoyed this beer on my last trip to Canada. Deep, dark and flavoursome. A heavy beverage with loads of character. Good stuff! Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA Dec 1, 2007 Transparent dark mahoagny, film/ring of bubbles. Aroma has a strong vegetal character overtaking the nuuty/toasted standard. Flavor is nothing but residuel sugar and faint roasted nuts. As it warms gets nuttier, but not much else going on.
