Slacks (480), Bolton, Ontario, Canada Oct 15, 2006 Draught @ Hostex: Judging by the percentile rank when I ranked this (38) I’m relatively alone in loving this one. I had been directed to try it by Phil at King Brewery and luckily ran across it on draught the following day. Met the brewmaster whose abrupt attitude and thick accent were highly entertaining. Pours a deep copper with a good sized head. Aroma of honey and lightly smoked malt, quite nice. Flavour is exceptional to my tastes; rich caramel malt, light smokiness, fruity tones, and delicate background hopping. Out of 10 samples it was the only one I actually doubled back to try again. Extra credit for the car oil draught tap. Trev (850), Lakeville, Minnesota, USA Aug 27, 2006 Bottle: Pours a dark reddish copper with a medium foamy off white head. Looks beautiful.
Aroma is light toasted malt and caramel sweetness. very light bitterness.
Flavour is nutty malt, sligh burnt grain taste that carries into a bit of a light clingy bitter finish but quite enjoyable overall. JHunter (242), British Columbia, Canada Aug 27, 2006 pours a bronze color w almost no head matlyu sweet taste with hints of a burn grain hops. but very enjoyable LordBeamish (144), Boozetown, Ontario, Canada Aug 9, 2006 bottle: Poured a dark, chestnut brown with a small, creamy head that dissipated quickly. A definite floral and malty aroma welcomes the nostrils. Starts moderately sweet with bold malt and hop flavours. For a dark ale, it finishes surpisingly nice with only a slight bitter aftertaste. I wasn’t expecting much given the unfortunate name, but I was pleasantly surprised. Somewhat like a very thin Guinness. Not my favourite style but OK nonetheless. KingofCastle (202), London, Ontario, Canada Aug 7, 2006 Updated: Sep 21, 2006bottle: Hey, someone took a solid brown ale & mixed it with water and a bit of soda pop! OK brown ale but not worth all the hype: smells and tastes slightly smoky, slightly roasted malts. Dark brown with very thin head. Mild sweetness but slightly bitter hops in finish. Not the smoothest brown ale I’ve had but not the worst either. Needs to have more rounded flavours of nuts, chocolate and/or tofee to get past this mediocrity. Could perhaps be marketed as Light Brown Ale but that don’t make sense. Too thin. My run-ins with Walkerville reps in the LCBO suggest that this is marketing gimmick for frat boys (what a sad marketing ploy). TheJester (694), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Jul 31, 2006 Thin brown head. Coffee-brown in colour. Slight aroma of chocolate. Fairly heavily carbonated. Straight-ahead dark ale: taste of roasted malt, sweet. Finishes with a bit of bitterness. Not bad, but it’s no Massive Irish. jacktripper (20), Canada Jun 4, 2006 Pours a deeper dark brown with a minimal cream-white head. Small taste of chocolate, stronger taste of toffee and nut as well as a very mild smokiness. Finishes slightly bitter with a hint of grain. Tasty but not entirely memorable. Pailhead (2572), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Apr 8, 2006 Bottle: Courtesy of Styles. Aroma is very grainy and nutty. Pours a transparent reddish-brown with an insignificant off-white head. Flavor of nuts and light toffee. Touch of chocolate in the background. Finshes with some light roast and a hint of grain. Rather light and simple.
