Oakes (8072), gone rambling, Vietnam Jun 11, 2004 Amber colour. Slightly malty character with some caramel notes, and a hint of brown sugar. On the sweet side for the style. Slightly lime-like hop note at the end. JorisPPattyn (5155), Antwerpen, Belgium Dec 21, 2006 Small to little yellowish head over dark-chestnut beer. Sweet, aromatic nose with soft cake, some chocolate, (soft) touch of hops all the same, dark (but sweet) malts. Soft chocolate cake - again. Despite the near-absence of head, it feels very carbonated, on the verge of adding acidity to the beer. Sweet, but nowhere cloying; just a tad cola-like. Thanks to the malts, not light bodied; silky texture but heavily carbonated. There’s little more to expect from a brown ale. Thanks, Steve! JoeMcPhee (4911), Jackson Heights, New York, USA May 2, 2005 Dark amber colour, little head/lace. Frity aroma of peaches with coffee and toasted malts as well. Flavour is well-balanced, light noble hop aroma as well. Lubiere (4463), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Feb 17, 2006 Hazy brown ale with a big bubbled collapsing light moka head. A rather bizarre nutty aroma with sulfuric notes. In mouth, the beer is redeemed by a peaty smokey malt with slight lactic notes, herbal and slightly oily. Medium bodied. tiggmtl (4307), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada May 13, 2008 Grainy undertone to the sweet malts in the nose along with plenty of caramel, some grassy hops and a touch of chocolate malt character. Hazy and deep, amber-brown body is topped by a finger of large bubled cream coloured head that recedes rapidly to a thin but lasting cover. Malt forward flavour avoids being overly sweet. Grassy hops and light bitterness offer a counterpoint as do some darker malts. Grainy and nutty notes are apparent especially in the aftertaste. Medium light body is quite dry with fair carbonation. Decent and well-made if somewhat middle of the road - there’s nothing really distinguishable or memorable about this beer. Snifter. Just above fridge temperature. Can (BB 12-08-2008, LCBO at Lynden Park Mall in Brantford, May-08). Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Mar 22, 2005 Very creamy, not my cup of brown. Creamy head. Sharp hop bitterness in finish also good. Some sweet malt, caramel, some nuttiness. Easy drink but not specia Radek Kliber (3932), Toronto (Can) Krotoszyn (Pol), Ontario, Canada Jun 13, 2004 Sweet malt, some light bitterness. Amber, left rings of white head. Sweet malt .By style reminds me of Polish Strong Mocne beers. Ale yeast used in lager like temperatures? By the way there is town north of Krotoszyn in Poland that was called Neustadt (Newcity) now Nowe Miasto ...coincidence? HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Jun 29, 2005 Updated: Aug 21, 2005Draught At Volo. *not as good as it was when first released!!* Pours a dark copper/coffee colour with a very thin drool of head, no lacing to speak of. I tried and tried, very little aroma at all nowadays - some dark roast malt (sweetish but burnt), a touch of wood smoke. Taste is medium-bodied at best, bitter, deep over-roasted malt, apples and prunes. An after taste of faint smokiness, preserved fruit, touch of off-dry white wine. Hardly any carbonation. Where’s that gentle touch of rauchbier flavour I remember!
