3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 bluevegie (2854) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - APR 23, 2010
Poured a decent head but didn’t hang around on a black body. Aroma is milky coffee, roasted notes and hints of chocolate. The chocolate comes through more in the taste not overly so, liquorice, slightly warming alcohol and light grains.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 altonbrownd (3419) - Brussels, BELGIUM - APR 5, 2010
Bottle at Wildeman. Black body with thin, brown head. Smoky nose. Taste is also quite smoky. Very sweet too, with caramel notes. Syrupy texture. Quite enjoyable.
2.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 Frank (1966) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 25, 2010
The tag line on the bottle translates to something like "Truly strong, truly German," which is weird since this is a non-German style. Black w/ almost no head. Sweet raisins and nutty sherry-like malts dominate the nose. Flavor is lighter but generally similar and very lightly tart. Medium to full bodied and rather flat on the palate. Not a bad Baltic porter but the overall flatness of it takes away from the impression of it a great bit. I’m not sure if it’s time on the shelves or a brewing/packaging problem that caused this but one way or the other the beer I drank simply wasn’t all that good. Still a nice nose though.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 PotjeBier (425) - Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - MAR 13, 2010
50 cl bottle from De Bierkoning. Almost black color, nice off white head. Aroma of sweet roasted malt, a little smoke and a little fruit (raisin?). Flavor is sweet malty, with a hint of banana. Throatwarming, even though it’s not that strong. Roastiness stays throughout, and there’s some fruit (blueberries?) in the aftertaste. Good and unmistakably German.
3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Pinball (7772) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - MAR 4, 2010
brown, smooth brown head.
faint aroma, roasted grains, faint hops. aroma like a dark beer, but faint and dry.
flavor is swet licorice, roasted grains, dark chocolate, faint dark caramel, sugar. very strong taste compared to the aroma. some bitter notes too. aftertaste is licorice and roasted grains. A rather typical porter, with more flavor than usual, especially the licorice and the bitter notes from roasted grains are prominent.
