The great Bill Monroe described his bluegrass music as “Scottish bagpipes and ole-time fiddlin’. It’s Methodist and Holiness and Baptist. It’s blues and jazz, and it has a high lonesome sound.” Our Black & Blue Grass begs to concur. Belgian yeast and stateside Saison spicing; black pepper and blue agave and lemongrass, and a great bet alongside any food you have around. Or, just enjoy a bomber of Black & Blue Grass as you watch the springtime ponies run.

This draft brew from a beer festival poured a head of foamy white colored bubbles that were long lasting and left behind a softly carbonated transparent orange colored body and a thick foamy lacing. The aroma was spicy and mild malt. The mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish. The flavor contained notes of mild spice and malt. An OK brew just nothing special.

Bottle. Mostly clear golden orange. White head. Nose/taste of agave nectar, red fruits, orange candy, lemongrass, white pepper, honey and exotic fruits. Body is a bit thin, but beer is tasty.

Rated on 11-14-12 at 800 Degrees Three Fires. Poured a small ivory head that mostly diminished, very little lacing, transparent body, very little visible carbonation, and a golden hue. The Aroma is yeasty, spicy, floral, and some hints of perfume. The Flavor is semi-sweet, lemony, mildly spicy, and some tastes of yeast. The Mouthfeel is smooth and this is a medium bodied Saison. Overall, this is a quaffable Saison, worth a try and a beer that I would drink again.

Bottle. Deep golden body approaching amber. Fizzy, white head, rapidly diminishing. Aroma of toasted grain, pepper, alcohol, spicy hops. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, soft carbonation. Some acidic tartness in the finish. A watery, flavorless start turns into a spice and pepper finish. Clean and dry, but not a lot going on in this beer.

Draft to taster at the brewhouse. Looks solid; a transparent light burnt-orange with white lacing. Smells solid; doughy and spicy. Tastes like it smells, but less complex. Average on the palate. Alright.

tap at Brewhaven festival - Gold pour with a very mild citrus and spicy yeast aroma. It’s mild to moderately bitter, a lightly spiced brew with a somewhat dry finish. It’s a fairly good brew, but doesn’t really rise above average.

22oz bottle from Louisville Beer Store in Louisville, KY. Pours a mostly clear, orange-gold colored body with a finger-width, frothy, off-white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is flowery with soft agave giving off just a light sweetness, lemon-grass, and pepper as advertised. Clean pils malts with a bit of a doughiness and a light yeast spice. Flavor is similar. Very floral up front with a nice black pepper note and a light lemon-grass. Touches of yeasty spice in the middle with a clean, somewhat grainy and doughy pils maltiness. Light agave note towards the end that helps this dry cleanly with a lightly spiced bitterness. Medium length aftertaste following a light-medium body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, a pretty nice beer. Simple, clean pils malts with a pleasant flowery quality throughout as well as a light black pepper and lemon-grass. Enjoyable.
