2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
UPDATED: DEC 31, 2011 New Albanian used to be a formidable brewery (circa 2004), but that is no longer the case. Here is another offering from them which I find to be muddled and unclean.
Draft: Unfiltered apricot. Tiny slow-rising bubbles form a thin rim. Nose is heavy on the grapefruit, peach pit, mango, and doughy yeast. Whisper of pine needles, husky malt, and sweet graham. Carbonation stings the palate with a light prickle. Opens earthily hoppy yet multilayered with an array of juicy citrus notes. Adeptly balanced with a mouthful of chewy malt and honeyed toast. Incredibly quaffable and appropriately bright, due to pockets of passionfruit juiciness which allay the sweetness. Hint of sulfur arises as it warms, but doesnít detract. Also turns a bit husky. Odd combination of toasted malt hulls and alcohol impart perceptible levels of astringency which hinder the bodyís feel. Staunch pinewood does its job, however, and negates the marmalade mushiness while accentuating the dryness. Merely a dab of acidity, and what is there, is kept at bay by the resilient pinewood richness. Closes exceptionally balanced with a magical showcase of flavorful hops, mint leaves, melon seeds, and tightening pine needle bitterness which wash away the lurking trail of toasted malt hulls and biscuity sweetness. Awesome job with this.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Hazy copper pour with an off-white head. The aroma is mostly pine and herbal hops. It has a medium body with smooth texture and average carbonation. The taste is bitter with a long finish.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours a dark orange/light red with a nice two finger white head leaving good lacing down the glass.
Smells of rich caramel malt. Not a whole lot of hops in the nose.
Starts off a little caramel, but rounds into an astringent piney bitterness lingering on the tongue.
Mouthfeel is good. A little bit sticky with good carbonation, but not cloying.
Just an ok beer. Nothing really stands out about it, but nothing is terribly poor either.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
22 oz bought at the keg in Indiana. Darker imperial IPA than I'm used to. Taste the booze bite. Not a huge fan.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Orange with a white head. The aroma is full of toffee, grass and pine. The flavor is a bit more complex. I get some toffee, biscuit and caramel malts, as well as some grass from the hops and a medium amount of bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
2/19/2011: NABC Hoptimus Imperial IPA... Aroma: Citrus (slight grapefruit) and light toffee maltiness. Appearance: Bright copper color; transparent liquid with a dense beige crown. Flavor: Orange, grapefruit, and a splash of pineapple; moderate bitterness. Palate: Medium to medium-full body; silky smooth texture. Overall: Good, but seems a bit weak for my taste.
Draught sample (10.7% ABV; 100 IBU) at New Albanian Brewing Company in New Albany, IN. Rating #154 for this beer.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottlepour copper color. Nosedank hop and molasses. Taste similar, dank up front, soem sweetness in early palate, followed by a weird wood or grilled flavor. Bitter finish.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Press a hazy yellow gold from the bottle with thin ring of off-white lacy head. Aroma is big caramel malt and booze, slight earthy hop. Taste is a little more balanced with some piney notes, but still a little sweet. Meh.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bomber - pours pale amber with ivory head. Nose is caramel, a wild field, and a bunch of indiscernible goodies akin to grapefruit. Flavor adds citrus colony that just got paint stripped. Dry. Bitter. Fruity aftertaste. I was hoping for a more pronounced malty backbone, but there wasnít much there. A good thing I didnít rate this three years ago when I was at the brewery; I would have hated it. Now, it is passable for a dipa.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Clear-bodied, deep, bold orange in color with a bright white head. The aroma is really wacky. Itís sweet and sticky, but not because of the hops. Itís residual sugars... and somehow, without crystal sugars. Something about this smells like a vegetable or root of some sort. Beets? No! Radishes! Weird, but good. In the mouth itís incredibly unique. Iím not sure what hops were used, but this is really distinctive. Nice, and I would never guess this has such a high level of IBUs. Iím doubting itís actually that high. Eh... I had higher expectations.

Bomber. Maltier than I expected. Nothing that stood out as memorable. Fairly carbonated though
