Schroppfy (1733), Ohio, USA May 29, 2005 This is hefty! A delicious smoky aroma, bacon, but with an undercurrent of spicy flowers. Strange mouthfeel, almost a cross between oily and chalky at the finish. Big smoke presence that really lingers, along with a meaty (not over the top) flavoring. Yummy. Beautiful to behold too; clear ruddy brown and just looking the part. Very nice. Thanks TAR! htsprint1 (51), Urbana, Alabama, USA May 6, 2005 Thanks to TAR for this hand-bottled sampler fairly early in the post-Dark Lord gathering. Very unique beer. My first non-porter smoked. Smells like smoked meat, some tobacco in there. Definite refined smoke character in the flavor. It’s more than the "liquid smoke" I’ve gotten from other beers. There’s some meat in here, some sweetness. Very well-done and balanced. BBB63 (3810), La Porte, Indiana, USA May 2, 2005 Thanks Jeff for the sample! The pour is a coppery hue with a small fading head and minor lacing. The aroma has notes of smoked and meaty malts, floral and spicy hops, english pipe tobacco, and a subdued character of clover. The taste starts smoked and chewy with a mild sweeter background. Some bitters and spice shine through every so often. A bit of twangy fruit even shows at the end. The feel lush and smooth. A well balanced smoked bier that isn’t overpowering and let all those sublime undertones add depth and enjoyment. YUMMY! TAR (2008), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA Apr 10, 2005 Draft: Rufous with tiny speckles. Off-beige foam recedes to a frothy ring. Splendidly smoky aroma with tangy, anise-spiced smoked sausage scents mixed with delicate plum fruitiness, moist tobacco, and herbal hops. Slightly perceptible alcohol vapor. Firmly bodied and fairly fuzzy. Flavorsome blanket of smoke topped with supple bready malts and fresh tobacco latch onto the palate to balance the spicy hop immensity. Tangy pork flavor is matched with a date-like sweetness. Ale-like fruitiness adds slickness to the firm, minerally dryness. Anise, along with a mere trace of alcohol, impart a dry/minty effect while reinforcing the overall firmness. Finishes smoothly smoky with a spike of punctual hop bitterness and softly floral Hallertuer to balance. Like a smoked stickbier…and a lovely one, at that. bu11zeye (3780), Frisco, Texas, USA Apr 6, 2005 (Draft) Pours a clear amber with small white head. Aroma of mild smoke and sweet. Flavor of spicy sausage and smoke.
