COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
New Albany’s sister city was described by H.P. Lovecraft in his story “The Dunwich Horror” as “lonely and curious,” boasting “sparsely scattered houses wear(ing) a surprisingly uniform aspect of age, squalor, and dilapidation”, with “gnarled, solitary” inhabitants who are “silent and furtive.” In other words, our quirky river town.

My second pour was a very fine smoked beer. It almost felt Lovecraftian to drink - if I could get a growler while playing Elder Signs over a long evening it would be a perfect pairing.

Aroma / Appearance - A fluid black base is creamy and sticks to the glass with a clear feel. Light smoke, ash, and coffee lurk furtively in the air with a hint of mystery. This is like drinking a porter in a foggy dock.

Flavor / Palate - Malt with black coffee perks up the palate. A smoky transition sweeps into the bitter dry finish. Sticking in the throat it is a remarkable and balanced beer. I could drink a few pints if it were available at the brewpub.

Tap at Bank Street location. Chocolate malt and light earthy smoky aroma. Black brown with a small tan head. Woody smoke, light sweet mocha, and slightly acidic flavor. Medium creamy body. Did I mention how much I love smoked beers?

Draft at the source. Clear deep ruby maroon color, beige head. Aroma of burnt coffee, subtle bitter cocoa. Taste is espresso with an edge of campfire. Nice subtlety and complexity. Delicious.

Draft. Smoked ham and chocolate malt aroma. Black with minimal head. Sweet smoked ham and chocolate/caramel malt flavor. Nicely blended. Very tasty.
