3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sample at the 4th Annual Coldest Day of the Year Stout Tasting on 01/21/2012: Dark brown pour with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of dark chocolate, malt and hops. Full-bodied with a roasty character and notes of dark malts, chocolate and coffee. The finish is sweet at first and leaves notes of soy sauce and berries. Above average overall.

Bottle thanks DalzAle. Pours a oily brown black with a tight foamy tan head that fades to a film. Aroma is roasted malt and bitter chocolate. Taste is bitter and slightly off putting chocolate and roasted malt with a little pepper and anise too. Palate is full and chaulky with a little funk and finishes dry.

Bottle. Dark cherry and molasses malt aroma. Oil black color with small head. Slightly sweet chocolate toffee malt flavor. Mild bitter finish. Different for an Imperial Stout - subdued and smooth.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Beer #20 at GTMW ’09. Great stout look in the glass, big brown head over a black body. Smell has hint of gunpowder from toy cap pistols, but also a sweet beer smell. Cherries are very much there in the taste, but still kind of light and likeable. Stout has none of the flaws of the style: no astringency or burnt grain taste, no coffee. Just a straightforward stout base. Goes down very nicely. A great aperitif beer.

Big black pour tall brown head. Full well coated palate. A bitter dry finish on the mouth after a taste of light chocolate with a hint of sweet cherry. Pretty good stuff.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at GTMW 2009
My second stop was to scope out New Albanian. Missing out on Thunderfoot on two previous locations I made it a point to get it a try. I am very glad - if this is ever on tap when I visit I know what I will be ordering with dessert.
Aroma / Appearance - The tan head bobbed over an oily black body. Dark cherries, oak, ash, chocolate, and anise give it a strong presence. Plum hides in the background.
Flavor / Palate - The aging balances well with the underlying imperial stout. A cherry finish makes it an excellent introduction to the imperial stouts that would be sampled in the next couple of hours. This is a hidden gem of the festival every year.
