It’s not dead, but Gratzer is definitely a long-buried style from Poland. And together with 3Floyds we have unearthed the best of beer zombies. Full of bold flavors from oak-smoked wheat, and along with Midnight Wheat, this beer presents a pure black pour. A subtle, spicy note from the Polish Lublin hops hides in the aroma, just below the dark and smoky surface. Despite all appearances, the Gratzer is very drinkable at 4.5% ABV, and walks itself with a nice, light body. Cheers to drinking smoky, undead beers. Prost!

Target, Polish Lublin

Pale, Midnight Wheat, Oak-Smoked Wheat

Special Processing
Add a small amount of Lacto (souring bacteria) to a portion of the overall wort, which produces lactic acid that gives a characteristic aroma and sourness. That acidic portion is then added to other portion of the wort that was fermented with the German Ale yeast.

Draught. Pours a near black color with a moderate tan head on there. Nose is fairly light and roasty up front, which makes it inviting. Taste is fairly smokey with a nice dry finish. Pretty decent brew.

Dark pour brown head. Aroma is light smoke, wheat. You get the sweetness of lactose and smoke in the aftertaste. Chewy wheat beer. Cool graphics on the label. Nice lacing.

Pint bottle. Opaque black color. Aromas of charred bread crust, earthy smoke and licorice. Dry slightly acidic taste and roasty taste with charred bread, licorice and some earthy smoke. Dry woody taste. Acidity and roasteness seem to be detracting and masking the smokiness which is a pity. A disappointment from these breweries.

22oz bottle, dark brown-black color, with a fluffy tan head, with a mild grainy toasted, chocolate, roasted, wheat malt, brown chocolate nose, with a faint coffee, subtle smoke, burnt toast accent, and a subtle ashy, burnt chocolate pie crust note in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a grainy mild smoked, toasted, black, roasted, wheat malty, chocolatey, light black coffee, subtle salty, burnt toast character, with a faint fruity, doughy, yeasty, burnt bread crumb flavour, leading towards a doughy yeastiness, roasted, black, toasted maltiness, black coffee bitterness finish.

Bottle shared with friends @ home from Saveur-Biere.com - Color: clear dark brown beer with black reflection, no carbonation and small white foam. Smell: roasted malt nose with small sour balance. Taste: nice roasted malt taste with small sour balanced not so intensive. Interesting taste but not as well drinkable. Aftertaste: small caramel finish with sour presence.

Poured from bottle into a tulip glass Appearance – The beer pours a deep brown color with a billowy cream colored head floating atop the beer. The head has a fantastic level of retention, with the billowy head slowing receding with big bubbles popping within, leaving a great level of streaky lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the brew is strong of a smoky and roasted malt smell mixed with a decent showing of some coffee and a bit of char. Along with these smells comes notes of a grainy smell as well as a bit of toast, creating a toasty and dark smell overall. Taste – The taste begins with a mix of roasted malt flavor with hints of coffee and some char. As the taste moves on a little bit of an almost sour funky flavor works its way onto the tongue all while a little bit of caramel sweetness comes as well. The sweetness fades fast however and is replace by some tastes of more roasted malt and an increase in smoke and toast. In the end, one if left with a rather roasty and smoky, but still rather thin flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is rather thin and light with a carbonation level that is on the average side. For the style a little thicker of a body may have been slightly nicer for the roast and smoke flavors. Overall – A fairly decent brew overall, but not really worth the larger price tag for a more standard lighter porter/brown style brew. Just alright.
