It’s not dead, but Gratzer is definitely a long-buried style from Poland. And together with 3Floyds we have unearthed the best of beer zombies. Full of bold flavors from oak-smoked wheat, and along with Midnight Wheat, this beer presents a pure black pour. A subtle, spicy note from the Polish Lublin hops hides in the aroma, just below the dark and smoky surface. Despite all appearances, the Gratzer is very drinkable at 4.5% ABV, and walks itself with a nice, light body. Cheers to drinking smoky, undead beers. Prost!

Target, Polish Lublin

Pale, Midnight Wheat, Oak-Smoked Wheat

Special Processing
Add a small amount of Lacto (souring bacteria) to a portion of the overall wort, which produces lactic acid that gives a characteristic aroma and sourness. That acidic portion is then added to other portion of the wort that was fermented with the German Ale yeast.

22 oz bottle. BB May 2015. Bomber tasting at Timo A. Courtesy of Euphemos.
Dark reddish brown colour with a tiny off-white head. Roasted malt and coffee in the aroma. Roasted malt, earth, coffee and mild sourness in the flavour. I don’t like this.

Sour smoked choc in this black brew with a beige head. Choc and salty or sour at first with a smokey aftertaste. It's a light body and a good beer. The sweet and tart go well together and the smoke is a nice finish.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall light brown head that fades relatively quickly. Aroma of roasted malt, raisins, alcohol, earth, mushrooms, marshmallows and a bit of sour grapes as well - quite complex. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong chocolate and earthy malts at first with a big hit of smoke and tobacco showing a relatively light finish with a bit of nuts and earth and following with a light fruitiness. Aftertaste is just as complex with everything in the taste ranging from alcohol to chocolate to sour grapes, peanut butter, earth and cereal. Overall, a nice beer and hard to compare to others from the style since I haven’t had many at all - even in Poland, and given that it is totally far removed from a traditional Gose, not worth comparing. That said, it’s a good beer and deceiving at 4,5% abv - a nice beer that should be sampled if you can find it! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Crystal City Wine Shop in Arlington, Virginia on 22-July-2014 for US$9,99 sampled at home in Washington a few steps away on 22-March-2015.

This collaboration ale is totally one of a kind. In fact, this may be the single weirdest beer I’ve ever imbibed. And the bottle may be the coolest I’ve ever seen. I mean, punk rock zombies riding on bicycles? Shit’s amazing! As for the beer itself, you’ll die of shock if you’re expecting to see a light-colored sour/wheat-type ale. Gratzer pours almost black. It has a sour, fruity smell, but there are acrid smoke aromas, too. The taste is the absolute strangest part. Spicy hops, sour yeast, smoky malt, and a hint of sweetness from the wheat. Ultimately, this is probably not a beer I’d ever fall in love with, but it sure was a lot of fun to try. Did I mention the bottle’s awesome?

Bottle. A- Slightly sour, smokey, roasty, light. A- Black color, dark liquid, light brown head. T- Slightly tart, smokey, wheat. P- Medium body, average texture, medium carbonation, tart smokey finish. O- I have a hard time calling this a gose. More like a smoked beer to me, but what do I know. Surprising how dark it is yet how light and tart it tastes. Lots of smokiness and a little bit sour. Otherwise that’s about all I get here.

What the hell happened? How can two of the best breweries in the world produce a beer that tastes like shite? I don’t understand...you control your brand. You make an educated decision as to what you release to the world. It represents you. Nothing about this was enjoyable. Dark ebony with a unique sour milk quality. Light, hints of smoke, but not even a bit enjoyable. Think that this is might be a decent representation of the style but in no way enjoyed the style. Avoid this one. Don’t let the brewery names deceive you!

Draught. Pours a near black color with a moderate tan head on there. Nose is fairly light and roasty up front, which makes it inviting. Taste is fairly smokey with a nice dry finish. Pretty decent brew.
