It’s not dead, but Gratzer is definitely a long-buried style from Poland. And together with 3Floyds we have unearthed the best of beer zombies. Full of bold flavors from oak-smoked wheat, and along with Midnight Wheat, this beer presents a pure black pour. A subtle, spicy note from the Polish Lublin hops hides in the aroma, just below the dark and smoky surface. Despite all appearances, the Gratzer is very drinkable at 4.5% ABV, and walks itself with a nice, light body. Cheers to drinking smoky, undead beers. Prost!

Target, Polish Lublin

Pale, Midnight Wheat, Oak-Smoked Wheat

Special Processing
Add a small amount of Lacto (souring bacteria) to a portion of the overall wort, which produces lactic acid that gives a characteristic aroma and sourness. That acidic portion is then added to other portion of the wort that was fermented with the German Ale yeast.

Pour is a black with an average tan head. Aroma is coffee and smoke. Flavor is about the same a bit of coffee up front then comes a nice earthy smoke but it’s all followed up with a little sourness. The sourness is very minor and the smoke and coffee are left on the tongue as this goes down. Kinda like a sour Schwartz beer? Very different and I have nothing to compare it to.

Appearance: this beer pours with a huge dark tan head, takes a while to pour down a glass and is very dense, the beer is very black even around the edges, head looks like it’s off of a root beer float, very attractive beer Aroma: coffee, chocolate, smoke Taste: coffee, bitter, smoky, Palate: very bitter aftertaste, average carbonation, leaves mouth wet, medium mouthfeel Overall: a very good looking beer, unfortunately the complexity is lacking, it tastes more like a porter, no sour notes picked up, all in all this still is a good beer

Poured pitch brown with a 2 finger head. Aroma is smoke and roast. Flavor is roasty and a tad sour at the end. Went down easy and was slightly thin, but not in a bad way. Enjoyable.

Pour is almost black but more deep brown. Aroma is lite and smokey with a touch of sweetness. A smokey gose with a little sour thrown in. A dry soft mouth feel.

Draught at 3 Små Rum, Göteborg. Black beer with a nice lasting beige head. Caramel aroma, chocolate, licorice, smoked notes, vanilla, toffee, viola, some licorice. Soot flavor, smoked, salty, leather, ash, vanilla, some hoppy bitterness, peat, smoked sausage, fruity, some cocoa. Interesting but a bit all over the place.

Poured from the bottle. Thick head and nice lacing. Aroma is great, little smokey, little hoppy. Flavor is similar, a bit salty, a bit sour. Thin like the dark largers. Very drinkable, I love it and might try to brew this one myself.

Have never had this style before, so I don’t know how to rate this really. Amazingly low ABV. Amazingly dark color. Flavor is a bit thinner than I was expecting. Quite a few smokey notes. Recommended, if just to try.

Draught at 3 Små Rum, Göteborg, on October 4, 2014.
Black color, brown head. Smoked, roasted scent, charcoal, bitter, resin, alcohol, a weak 7 for aroma, almost a 6. Salty, thin, smoked, light taste. Raosted, smoked, fresh aftertaste. Thin mouhtfeel, low bitterness. Hints of nettles and grass, a bit all over the place this one. It works, but could work better being more one dimensional, or at least a few dimensions less.

Draught @ 3 Små Rum. Pours hazy black with a big frothy and rocky brownish beige head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thick trace on the glass. Smell is slightly malty and tiny smokey with toasted malts, caramel, cereal, hay, moist soil, burnt wood, peat, smoked sausage and lemon zest. Taste is sour and malty with roasted malts, lemon juice, ash, caramel, yoghurt, burnt wood, hay, moist soil and lemon zest. Mouthfeel slightly soft, dry, slightly tart and medium bodied. Finish is sour and slightly malty with roasted malts, burnt caramel, burnt wood, lemon juice, yoghurt, hay and lemon zest. Strange but I like it. Nice mix of maltiness, smoke and tartness.

Smoky, slightly musky, almost stinky feet aroma. Nearly black with a tan head. Light campfire smoke and charred wood flavors along with a funky, slightly sour note. Then a thin, bitter coffee and chocolate bite comes out and accentuates these flavors. This doesn’t sound good to this point, but it really is! The body is quite thin and light, somewhat like Guinness but even less body. Near the end the body actually picks up a bit probably from the wheat. Leaves a bitter, charred flavor with more of the sourness. Somehow this all comes out as a delicious, refreshing dark beer. It’s like a dark lawnmower beer!
