It’s not dead, but Gratzer is definitely a long-buried style from Poland. And together with 3Floyds we have unearthed the best of beer zombies. Full of bold flavors from oak-smoked wheat, and along with Midnight Wheat, this beer presents a pure black pour. A subtle, spicy note from the Polish Lublin hops hides in the aroma, just below the dark and smoky surface. Despite all appearances, the Gratzer is very drinkable at 4.5% ABV, and walks itself with a nice, light body. Cheers to drinking smoky, undead beers. Prost!

Target, Polish Lublin

Pale, Midnight Wheat, Oak-Smoked Wheat

Special Processing
Add a small amount of Lacto (souring bacteria) to a portion of the overall wort, which produces lactic acid that gives a characteristic aroma and sourness. That acidic portion is then added to other portion of the wort that was fermented with the German Ale yeast.

22 oz. bottle. Pours a black color with a thick, tan 1" head leaving some nice lacing. Aroma is primarily smoky with some coffee notes as well. The smoke goes with the taste as does the coffee. Finish is dry, the smoke still lingers. Not a fan of smoked beers, glad I tried this one.

The aroma is great with lots of malt and smoky notes... but the aroma of smoke is not over the top just an added extra. Smoke works good as an extra...some smoke beers are just so over the top they create a terrible combination... smoke should be yummy like a smoked piece of meat not like a bond fire of your neighbor’s garbage...the taste is not over the top yummy... but reminds me of an okay brown ale...overall it falls short of exceptional but is a tasty example of a brew with smoke...

A dark brown Gratzer with a thick creamy brown head. In aroma, nice bitter chocolate and coffee with grassy hops, light peated notes, nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity chocolate malt with coffee grind, light smokey character, woody notes, restrained yet good. On tap at emporium, Milwaukee Ave.

Looks nice, dark brown, fluffy kahki head. We’d have guessed 7-8% from the body alone, though it’s 4.5%. Didn’t really get it, though. The very light smoke aspect and the slight sour together just didn’t do much for me. It was interesting, but I neither hated it or liked it. Too expensive for that...

Black. Fair khaki head. Pretty dry. Toasty. Dusty cocoa. Very light coffeeish. Light Smokey. Very mild sourness. Lactic. No fruitiness really. Quite unique and interesting.

Blacker than black with a lasting tan head. Sweet aroma of roasted dark chocolate, vanilla bean, and spice. Like mexican hot chocolate. Flavor of dark chocolate, campfire coals, and spices. Strange sourness kinda kills the flavor. Seemed medium to heavy bodied to me. Really interesting style, but I wish it didn’t have that funky sourness. I like smokey beers and sour beers; i just think the two flavors don’t go well together.

Bottle: Surprised on how dark it is and also surprised by the lack of pronounced smoke. It is more akin to a Schwartzbier than anything else. Also the slight lacto sourness seems out of place. About the only redeeming values are the use of Midnight Wheat and the lowered alcohol. Come on guys, this is a lame dick effort... MEH!

Draught @ Smoke & Barrel, D.C. Hazy brown-black, little head. Smokey nose. Dry, liquorice, almost chalky. Mild toast, nicely balanced. Little lacto. Kinda nice.
