COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
It’s not dead, but Gratzer is definitely a long-buried style from Poland. And together with 3Floyds we have unearthed the best of beer zombies. Full of bold flavors from oak-smoked wheat, and along with Midnight Wheat, this beer presents a pure black pour. A subtle, spicy note from the Polish Lublin hops hides in the aroma, just below the dark and smoky surface. Despite all appearances, the Gratzer is very drinkable at 4.5% ABV, and walks itself with a nice, light body. Cheers to drinking smoky, undead beers. Prost!

Target, Polish Lublin

Special Processing
Add a small amount of Lacto (souring bacteria) to a portion of the overall wort, which produces lactic acid that gives a characteristic aroma and sourness. That acidic portion is then added to other portion of the wort that was fermented with the German Ale yeast.

Pours a really dark brown with a small offwhite head that leaves good lacing. Nose is of burnt cereals, ash and slight grapes. Taste is more wheat, smoke, ash and other husky cereals. Body is medium and carbonation moderately high. I thought it was alright but I wouldn’t pick it up again. One and done.

On tap at Culpeppers. Nice smoked malt aroma. Caramel with a lot of molasses and coffee. Dark brown-black opaque with creamy tan lacing head. Medium body with medium carbonation. Moderate malt taste, a little sourness. A little sweet but not overly so. Dry bitter smoky finish with light nutty after.

From a 22 oz bottle. Pours a very dark mahogany black with a tan head. Good lacing. Nose of roasted malts with a smoke earthiness. Light to medium body. Flavor is a dark smokiness with some unusual almost must tastes. Different but OK.

Appearance: opaque black with brown margins, two fingers of fluffy light beige head, good retention and patchy lacing. (4/5) Aroma: ashy, dark roasty malt, earthy. (7/10) Taste: low sweet, mild bitter, mild tart. (7/10) Palate: medium-light body, lively carbonation, crisp slightly smoky and tart finish. (4/5) I went into this knowing full well it was nearly a year past its best-by, but I was both curious about the style, and hopeful that as essentially a smoked sour, it would actually have an extended shelf life. It did not disappoint. Despite its intimidating colour, it’s light-bodied, easy-drinking, and mildly tart. Someone unfamiliar with smoked beers might find the smokiness odd or intrusive, but I find it mild and pleasant. The lively carbonation and lactic tartness prevent the smoke from becoming mouth-coating, and the low sweetness works well. The low ABV and tart finish make this pretty sessionable. Really quite an interesting beer, and worth picking up even as far past its best-by as this was. (15/20)

22 oz bomber. Pours a very dark mahogany brown and nearly black in color and crowned by a thick layer of tan colored foam that shows good retention and leaves steaks of lace around the glass. The aroma has a very rich smokeiness to it that permeates throughout along with notes of dark cocoa, earthy roast, toasted nuts and a malt base of toasted grains, smoked wheat, and caramel. The dark malts and cocoa all support the smoky notes. The flavor follows with the smokey dark malts, burnt grains, earthy roast, and some dark cocoa to add balance. There is some tartness that starts to come through and adds depth to the roasty, bitter, and smokey flavors. Medium bodied and quite dry with balanced carbonation that leads to a slightly tart and smokey finish. The roasted malts and earthy flavors add a real richness to go with the smoke character throughout. Very interesting take on the style, but not something I could drink a whole lot of.
