Commercial Description:
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

This beer pours dark brown/black. The aroma is a mild one of coffee beans. This aroma continues to the palate and is enhanced by mild carbonation. This beer is fairly smooth in body and has some nice bitterness to it as well.

bottle - Pours a clear deep ruby red color with smallish light tan head that quickly dissipates. Aroma has vanilla, ash, slight roasty notes, subtle smoke, continental malts and lightly toasted oak. Flavor is malty, slight chewy, with some roastyness, wet oak, touch of tobacco smoke. Finish is just on the sweet side of balanced. Overall this is pretty decent. Not something I would reach for frequently, but on occasion this could be welcome.

Pour nice and dark. Smell has some vanilla and roastiness. Taste includes some very nice coffee notes with a hit of chocolate. It is smooth and refreshing on the palate, borderline watery but avoids this. Some light lacing left. A nice dark beer that has a light flavor and body.

Nice malty nose with roast notes. Pours a reddish brown with a resilient tan head. Excellent lacing. Flavor is roasty but mild with a soft mouthfeel and little hop character. A slight burnt bitterness rises in the finish.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of light malt, slight Oreo, and slight smoke. Poured copper/very deep amber in color with a small, creamy, off-white head that lasted throughout. Clear. Very slightly sparkling. Some tiny particles throughout. Flavor is slightly sweet. Tastes of malts, light nuts, slight caramel, and hints of sugar and chocolate. Medium body. Slick, then slightly dry texture. Average carbonation. Malt, light nut, and slight caramel finish is a tad dry. Really boring.

Very dark red, no head. Light, light floral aroma. Flavor is hard to pin down... sort of like a doppelbock, sort of like a stout... but with a little English-style ale-ness. Thin feel. Eh.
