COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Feb 8, 2012 tap at Valley Tap. Dark brown with some red pour, nice head and lacing. Aroma of malt, dark chocolate and belgian yeast. Taste is similar, palate a little thin and some carbonation.

Pours a beautiful, clear ruby with a small cream head that does not linger. Aroma of roasted malt, biscuit and cracker. Chewy mouthfeel follows through with the same roast, malt throughout and a sweet finish. Slight watery finish

Pours a dark ruby, kind of brown colour with a bubbly off-white head. bubbles clinging to my glass. The smell is caramelized sugar, dark fuits, light spicy yeast. The taste has dark malt sweetness, toffee, dates, and again there is a little bit of belgian spiciness inthere - clove, cardamom. Also just a slight tinge of a metallicness in there. No alcohol flavour or warmth. The body of the beer is pretty light with comparatively high carbonation, but its not like champagne or anything. finish is spice and burnt sugar.

Tasted on draft at the Nashville Beer Festival. Pours clear, very dark amber, with an average beige head. The nose is toasted chocolate malt along with some light aromas of nutty vanilla. The flavor is malty chocolate, toasted and roasted, with the same nutty vanilla and a hint of bitterness. The body is medium with average carbonation and a long, roasted nutty vanilla finish.

Aroma: soft warm welcoming aroma, dark malts mixed with hop. Very nice blend.8-
Appearance: dark brown into black. Bone white , lighter top with lace.
Palate / Taste: medium bodied. Soft , musky, earthy, gentle carbonation. Quiet mild yet not boring. Bit of mystique feel found in here. Perfect daily choice. Splendid offering.

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass. Color was brownish black, but closer to black. Just over an inch of head. Tannish white lacing with some sporadic bubbles in there. Healthy amount of film on the sides. Smelled dark chocolate malts. Also coffee, caramel and toffee in there as well. Tasted malts, but couldn’t distinguish the favorite. If a gun was to my head, I’d say dark chocolate. Definitely dark malts, but relatively bland overall. Nice smooth finish. Medium body. Creamy finish. Average carbonation. Smooth abrupt finish. A decent beer overall. Nothing too special, but it gets the job done. I’d give it another go some time.

Bomber bottle. Quickly dissolving dirty sandy head with covering but thin and fast lacing over a dark red body. Fragrant soap, with notes of funky fish, grocery aroma. Mildly sweet taste like sweet milk chocolate. Palate is medium thin body with good carbonation and pleasant feel. Overall, OK. Draught is better.
