Commercial Description:
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Dark brown pour, thick foamy head. Aromatic yeast. A very light tasting beer, with subtle chocolatey malts. Not a lot of hops to be found in this brew. Notes of caramel, cocoa and brown sugar. Overall this beer is a little too light for my liking, but it has an interesting story and I like the idea of a throwback, centuries-old beer from Belgium having a pretty high visibility in today’s market.

22 oz bottle. Pours a deep, dark brown with a thick, creamy tan head. Roasted dark chocolate malt aroma with a a some alcohol in the nose. Strong roasted malt flavor that is not too heavy. A surprisingly light, crisp feel to the brew. A bit of chocolate at the end and not much alcohol in the flavor, despite its prevalence in the aroma. A good dark beer for the summer because it packs a good flavor punch without being overly heavy.

Pours a dark brown color with a decent light tan head. This has a sweet aroma of roasted malt and some spice. The taste is assertive, yet quaffable. Roasted malt sweetness with notes of caramel, molasses and some slight well- balanced sourness, but still thin enough in texture to be refreshing and enjoyably drinkable even on a warm day. Similar to a dark lager, yet retaining the sweet fruity characteristics of an ale. I like!

Pours a clear dark brown with a small, tannish head with little lacing froma 12 oz bottle, I liked the elaborate story in the commerical description. Seems as good enough reason to travel to Belgium as any! Dark ale with balanced taste of nuts, a bit of raisons, and coffee and cocoa like malts. Perfect ale to sip late at night by the fire.

Bomber. Deep reddish-brown. Clear, medium head. Nice malty nose with a mostly caramel malty flavor profile along with notes of toast, smoke, and raisins. Clean finish with a bit of that lager sourness, and an enjoyable beer that can be sessionable...if you’re in a malty mood.

I have tried this on tap at multiple locations and it has always been flat. I have also bought a few bottles over the years. Surprisingly, it has always been at least as good out of the bottle, and often it is much better - sometimes it’s not even flat! Flavor (and there are many) has always been interesting and at times exceptional. If only it were not flat 90% of the time I’d give it a 4 out of 5.

Had it bottled. Sweet malty flavor. Has a hint of chocolate. Chalky aftertaste. Good beer. Would have it again.

Bottle: Pours a dark brown with a medium tan head. Has a sweet malty aroma with hints of chocolate. Has a roasty flavor that brings out the nuts with hints of dried fruit and chocolate leading into a smooth finish.
