Commercial Description:
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Best by 19Sept09, here on 04June09. Bomber. Chocolate and light roast in the nose, absent mocha, however, with some light grass and pale malts coming in under the intense nuts. Sweetish with a touch of caramel and a slighter hint of smoke. Near-pitch ruby with a creamy, superbly rocky and lasting tan head. Watery body is very creamy, very sweet with medium carbonation. A little stale nuttiness, hints of berry and perhaps star anise, mostly malty under the earthy chocolate. Touch of acidity. Light caramel, some crushed almondy shells and faint cherries, and man, the nuts are all over this thing. Little minty/herbal swipe. Too sweet for regular consumption, but there’s a nice sort of class here, in a singular way.

bottled, pours thin black with with minimal light tan head with heavy carbonation, heavy roasted coffee nose, full but light mouth feel with roasted coffee and lightly sweet malt, no hop bitters, very smooth and sweet residuals on palate, surprisingly light and very tasty

22 ounce bottle from Greenlife Grocery in Asheville, NC. Pours a very dark ruby color with a medium head. Decent head retention and excellent lacing. Aroma is nutty and grainy with lots of caramel and roast notes. Taste is light roast, caramel, nuts and lots of fruit notes, particularly peach, mango and strawberry. Very interesting and a bit different. I like this one a lot.

22 oz bottle. Pours a reddish black color with a medium off white-tan head which vanished quickly. Creamy mouth feel tastes of chocolate and coffee with minimal hop bitterness. This is a excellent easy going down beer.

22oz bottle. A very interesting beer. Light black pour, light tan head. Aroma of roasted grains. sweet coffee aroma. Flavor is very sweet. Well balanced. Lots of roasted grains, dark chocolates, deep earthiness. Finishes with a bit of wood flavors. Overall, first impression is of a standard Schwartzbier. Light bodied, refreshing, with some dry molasses.

This is an interesting beer and seems like a very light porter. Deep chestnut hue with a sandy foam. Aroma of coffee and caramel with a flavor to match, very sweet. Chocolaty. Not bad at all

Aroma - Chocolate, sweet toffee malts Appearance - Smallish head, black with red tint Flavor - roasted malts, some chocolate, tiny bit of bitter hops Palate - medium body, average carbonation, medium finish Overall - This beer isn’t bad, it is a little thin on flavors, and the strength of the flavors it has is not very lasting. It’s drinkable but not too memorable.
