Commercial Description:
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

1L bottle from local store. Pours dark brown with thin head. Aroma of malt and a hint of apricot. Smooth and crisp with moderate carbonation. The taste is of caramel and malt with a touch of chocolate and dark fruit. Good beer.

12oz bottle courtesy of lackenhauser poured into a pint glass. Looks dark, dark brown in the glass with hints of copper around the edges underneath a small, short-lived off-white head which leaves no lacing. The aroma is full of sweet lightly-toasted caramel malts. There are hints of coffee and chocolate that come out a little more as it warms. The taste doesn’t venture too far from the aroma and has dark sweet malts as the backbone with hints of smoke, coffee and chocolate on top. The finish is slightly dry and toasted. The mouthfeel is light for a Belgian dark but slightly heavier than a schwarzbier, so it’s an interesting mix. A tasty, if tough to categorize, black beer from New Belgium.

Pours a cola color with low carbonation and a creamy, off-white head. Has an interesting, mellow nose of coffee, cigar, toast, and roasted barley aroma that translates into a smooth, cocoa and caramel flavor with a touch of sweetness. Not intimidating, quite drinkable, with some fruit (papaya) and yeast in the background. Medium-bodied, velvety, with a moderately dry finish.

(Sample Date: 11/19/2008 Source:Other) 12 oz bottle. Roasty aroma with notes of coffee and molasses. Clear deep amber. Roast malts and coffee flavors with a bready quality (Reminds me of waffles and syrup) and a slight Belgian yeast character. Quite tasty.

Yeast, prunes, walnuts, roasted malts, and mild coffee for aroma. Dark roasted malt, and caramel for flavors. Lightly smoked and sweet toffee at the finish. Pretty good.

12 oz. single picked up at Riverside Wine and Spirits in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Best Before: 01MAY09. Appearance: Pours out a clear, dark chestnut brown body with a smallish, off-white head. Smell: Sweetish, fruity nose with light notes of caramel, roasted malt, and coffee. A pleasant chocolate scent grows and swarms the nose upon warming. Taste: Light tastes of roast, caramel, coffee, and even semisweet chocolate with a moderate amount of malty sweetness. Plenty of fig and Bing cherry fruit character. Dash of cola. Very minor hop character and bitterness. Hint of yeast. Lingering tastes of chocolate and roast on the drying finish. Mouthfeel: Makes me think of blend of a dark Belgian ale with a schwarzbier. Pleasant and highly drinkable with a reasonable ABV%.
