Commercial Description:
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Pours dark brown with a finger thick light tan head. The nose is sweet and malty with some chocolate. The flavor is subtly smokey and chocolate with more malt and a bit of fruit. Creamy on the palate.

Bottle. Thanks Chuck. Deep reddish black in color with a medium off white fluffy head that left a nice lacing on the glass. Malty chocolatety light roasty aroma. Dark fruity notes. Chocolatety malty caramel flavor. Sweet tasting. Full bodied. Very drinkable. Nice beer.

On tap, Flying Saucer-Cordova,TN Beautiful black pour. Cola-red when held up to the light. Sweet, smooth flavor with a well balanced hops presence. Goes down so easily. One of my new favorites.

33 cl bottle, Fargo. Brown cola colour, thick frothy head, burnt malt and coffee aroma. Sweet flavor, medium burnt/roasted malt with a bitter finish, smooth like ’almost’ flat cola.

Draught. Low but lasting off-white head. Pitch balck body. Weak mild berries aroma. Mild coffee caramel flavor with a heavy cabonation and a long sweet aftertaste.

Bomber bought in Evanston, Wyoming. Pours a ruby color with a medium tan head. The aroma is full of sweet malts and some fruitiness. The taste is very smooth; smooth and rich malts, some chocolate, light fruit and a bit of yeast. Some roasted or smoked character also. Pretty nice.
