wacohoover (100), Garland, Texas, USA Mar 27, 2008 Chocolate, roasted malts, and a little bitter at the end. One of New Belgiums better beers. Not great, but not bad either. cgort (52), mission viejo, California, USA Mar 25, 2008 Poured black with a light tan head. Smells of chocolate and caramel. Starts out with a dark fruit taste similar to an Abbey Ale that ends up tasting more chocolaty and dessert like with a hint of vanilla. Finishes with a very earthy taste similar to some wines. I do like that they are a little easier on the carbonation than some of their other beers. Overall good and would drink it again. rayOfBeer (316), El Cerrito, California, USA Mar 23, 2008 Poured from 22oz bottle a clear dark brown with a medium sized light brown head that slowly dwindled leaving nice lacing. Aroma is of cereal (Cheerios), toasted bread and a light sourness. The flavor comes across, with the slightess bitterness, as a light toasted bread, some malty sourness and a touch of mild roast coffee. There is a dry finish that comes in chalky with a bit of unsweetened coco powder. Overall the beer starts a bit watery but gets better, good but not great. IlanMan (816), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA Mar 21, 2008 Updated: Dec 16, 2008Not a bad brew. Pour was dark brown with nice white head. Taste was of malt, light caramel, a few hops, and some roasted characters. Ok but not super special. Would drink again but would not go out of my way to buy. JJClark (545), Roscoe, Illinois, USA Mar 21, 2008 Bottle. Pours a brown color with a creamy white head. Aroma of malt, fruit, caramel, grain. Tastes of roasted malt, soy with a bit of chocolate. Has a dry earthy finish.
highibus (421), Mill Creek, Washington, USA Mar 20, 2008 Dark brown to almost black. Aroma is really nice, biscuity and yeasty. I have had this beer for years, but this is my first rating. I tend not to buy NB much anymore. 10-15 years ago Fat Tire was my cross over beer. But it is nice to revisit and enjoy this beer. Nice finish as well, again the aroma is one of a kind. plbogen (2), Bryan, Texas, USA does not count Mar 19, 2008 I’m always a bit cautious with darker beer. However, 1554 is an absolutely delicious gem that has become one of my favorite beers. shendrix (478), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Mar 19, 2008 This brew is a breath of fresh air. Pouring full and dark with a light, frothy head, the nose does not do it justice, with little more than an understated roasted oat scent. But the flavor--now, that my friend is outstanding. Caramel and butterscotch frolic with oats and barley against a backdrop of raisins adn the lightest hint of cherries, all with a smoothly creamy, poppingly crisp mouth feel,
