Commercial Description:
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Nice dark chocolate color with a smooth cream colored head and a rich nutty choclatey flavor. It has a strong after taste a little metallic but mostly bitter.

black pour with a ring of cream colored froth. sweet malts and a hint of sugar as well. chocolate and roasted malts on the palate and a good thickness. this could easily be a daily drinker for me.

Pours a very dark red with a lot of off-tan head. Odor of oats and malts. Taste of bread, with chocolate and caramel that ends with a creamy aftertaste. This is actually very enjoyable.

Nice dark pour with a little red around the edges. Half inch of head and nice lacing as you go. Aroma is malts and bread. Flavor is definitely black bread with some chocolate and a little caramel. Nice. I’d buy a 6’er, no doubt.

22oz bomber from Bevmo Carmel Mountain. Pours clear dark brown with a nice beige head. light toffee, chocolate roasted malt, and coffee. A bit thin, a little overrated but not bad at all.

Poured a very dark brown with a one inch head, good amount of lacings. A sweet, slightly chocolate flavored beer with a mild hop presence. Overall a malt and chocolate exsperience. Very sessionable just a little underwhelming for my hop prefences. My first Belgium black ale, so I have no reference for this type. Seems to be a lot like Beck’s Dark or Heineken Dark. Very drinkable but not outstanding in any other way.

pours a burnt brown with a one finger fluffy tan head. aroma is toasted chocolate and caramel malt and a touch of hops. has a medium body with good lacing and carbonation. flavor is the same as aroma but stronger and the chocolate being more cocoa powder and dark chocolate. has a little dry aftertaste and overall not bad. better than fat tire and as it warms the aroma catches up to the flavor a little more rating wise.

The color is interesting and much darker then what I considered traditional Belgian Dark. 1554 pours a dark, dark brownish red with a light tan head and great lacing to the glass. The smell is sweet with chocolate maltiness. Not quite a Belgian Dark but not like a stout or porter. It’s very unique, which is very nice, and has a coco-coffee with a slight toffee taste to it. It is remarkably smooth and not heavy as one would expect from a darker ale. There is a great combo of happy citrus hops and a zesty acidic yeast that blends well. I think this beer is a great smooth taste and is very unique.
