Commercial Description:
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Thanks to tayner for the bottle. Dark copper color with a medium head. Aroma of toasted malt, smoke and dark fruit (mostly prunes). Sweet taste with a lite to medium body.

I think something was wrong with this tap or something... the other descriptions are nothing like what I experienced. It was a bit sour and flat. Hmmm... if I see this again, I’ll give it another shot and re-rate. On tap at Ginger Man.

(Bottle) Pours a very dark brown color with a small tan head. Aroma of dark malts, cocoa, and sweet toffee. Taste is quite malty, with a creamy and smooth body. Coffee and spice notes give the beer a dry finish. Very drinkable as well. A good beer!

Blah...I am always skeptical with traditional ales. This was a weird one (which is kind of the point). Aroma was very weak. Iced tea and dust. Pour was, well, close to black with no head. Taste was vanilla, dark fruit and dust. LIttle carbonation but that was expected. As it warms it gets better and the malt and graininess emerge. Not too bad after all. This beer just jumped .3 as I was typing.

Labeled as 1554 "Enlightened" Black Ale. Dark beer that glows mahagony when held agains the light. Frothy brown head that left sticky lace on glass. Chocolate and dusty grains in the nose. Very sweet, malty beer; the kind of sweet the makes your lips stick together until you lick them clean. Chocolate, vanilla, dark fruit, roasted grains and a faint smoke. Very easy drinker.

Yummy, black, and delightfully refreshing. This beer should be drank during football.
