Commercial Description:
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

On tap at Flying Saucer. Has a very dark ruby color with a small light tan head that diminishes quickly. The aroma is very malty and sweet. Good lacing on the glass. The taste was roasted malts with a nice finish. Enjoyed this one.

12oz bottle served in a shaker pint. Poured a deep brown with a hint of red with about a finger of off white head with fine bubbles. Cocoa in the aroma. Light to medium body. Chocolate malt with a little sweetness. Dry malty finish with some lingering chocolate flavors. Not a very complex beer, but pretty drinkable.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with off-white head. Aroma is malty and coffee. Flavor is malt, coffee, very roasted. Slighly spicy and acidic. This isn’t a style I’m very familiar with, but I like this one alright.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Smell is very malty with some roasty coffee character. Taste is good malts and sugar, it doesn’t have the dreaded New Belgium nastyness. I enjoyed this brew.

Bottle from South Bay Drugs: Dark brown color with ruby highlights held up to a flashlight and a light tan head. Aroma is rich and malty with a hint of smoke. Flavor is also sweet and malty with a hint of cherry followed by a light fruity acidic bitterness. Medium body is creamy with moderate carbonation.
