WESSIDEMC (10), Santa Cruz, California, USA Dec 25, 2007 The 1554 pours a dark brown with a nice thick head. It’s smooth and malty with a hint of chocolate flavor. Very good beer. A must try. swampstander (9), Palestine, Texas, USA does not count Dec 21, 2007 Pours with huge off-white head that settles to a thin lasting layer. Nice lace. Color is almost black with garnet highlights. Aroma is of coffee and chocolate with a subtle cherry-like fruitiness. Flavor is malty sweet with chocolate, coffee and almond toffee undertones. Seems only slightly hopped but has a nice balance. Finishes with a slightly sour but pleasing aftertaste. One of my favorites. fiulijn (7150), Como; Lausanne (CH); Malmö (SWE), Italy Dec 20, 2007 Draught Red-amber color. The aroma shows also some malt fruitness. Tha taste is malty, again with a light fruitness, and the bitterness is quite high, but still balanced. Well brewed. Angeloregon (2024), Portland, Oregon, USA Dec 17, 2007 From a bottle poured a black clear body with brown-amber tones. Medium-sized white head with favorable lacing left in the glass. Nose of caramel malts, fruits, and chewy breadiness. Light bodies mouth feel with a dry clean finish. One of my favorite New Belgian standards (which doesn’t really mean a lot). Rainmaker (1), USA does not count Dec 15, 2007 Found this at Goody Goody in Highland Village, Texas. Very smooth with carmel and chocolate overtones. Not too much foam. elelwarren (138), SF Bay area, California, USA Dec 15, 2007 Huge head on this dark, dark ruddy brown beer. Scent of tangerine skin & raspberry. Flavor quite sweet, with light roasted malts, candy sugar, caramel, & slight Belgian yeastiness combining. Very smooth, with little prickliness. Are there any hops? Like a slightly weakened, but strong flavored, dopplebock sans hops or possibly a very experimental attempt at an Abbey duppel which proved worth replicating for its own sake. Will buy more at the price. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA Dec 14, 2007 Clear dark reddish brown, moderate head with decent lacing and retention. Aroma is light chocolate, darker fruits, caramel. Medium to light body, dry finish. Nothing Belgian about it though. ketchepillar (475), Viña del Mar, Chile Dec 11, 2007 Bottle best before 1/25/08. Very dark deep red, with mostly disappearing one-finger head. Aroma: Very earthy tones; maltiness of a scotch ale combined with some darker stout/porter malts. Hops are faint. A little bit fruity (strawberry & cherry). Taste: More evidence of scottish & stout combination. Some fruitiness towards the end. Some dark chocolate in the finish & a hint of coffee. Finish is surprisingly dry, with a fair amount of dark malt bitterness. Mouthfeel is too stingingly carbonated, but not horribly so.
