Commercial Description:
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Huge frothy head and strong smell of malt. Very sweet chocolate and molasses flavor with no after taste.

From bottle, courtesy valpoaj, Thanks! : Pours a dark, black color with a small quick diminishing light brown head. Nose is heavy malts with some slight hints of fruit. Flavor is roasted, cocoa beans, and some fruit toward the end. Medium bodied, clean and crisp palate. Not to bad, i really like these traditional ales.

Red brown body with a creamy beige head; Quite big strangely composed biscuit like nose; Soft texture on fruity sweet body, slightly cloying; Medium long earthy chocolate thick finish, cocoa bean aroma, to sweet and a little to cloying. VERY strange!

Almost like an American brown. I don’t get the "zesty" adjective in the commercial description. A bit flat in taste. Pours dark, but has none of the Belgian brown taste. Not great.

Not sure why it took me so long to try this...but I’m sad I didn’t try it earlier. Great reddish black with nice tan head. Love that roasty chocolate nose and the malty, chocolately taste. I will have more from now on.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a garnet hue with a fleeting tan head. Roasted nut and chocolate malt smell. Light to medium bodied. Has a semi sweet chocolate flavor with roasted malts. Finishes with a wheat toast taste on the tongue. A pretty tasty brew whatever the style. sept 2004

Bottle; poured a brown color with a medium off white head. Aroma of chocolate, nuts and yeast. Palate was a little watery. Flavor was slightly sweet. Main flavors of chocolate, caramel ant nuts; possibly some dark fruit. Pretty tasty, but nothing to get overly excited about.

A beer that’s close to my heart, but the more I drink the less I understand why. Not watery, but not super-focussed; and certainly not that Belgian. However, if you’re looking for an easy-drinking porter that isn’t sweet, I would really give this a second glance -- even though it isn’t a porter.
