Commercial Description:
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Draught. Pour was clear dark brown in color with a medium sized beige head that is mostly lasting. The aroma is clean, light sweet malt and bitter chocolate. The flavor is roasted malt, subtle hop bitterness, bakers chocolate, and perhaps just a touch of dark fruits. Medium/light body. A very solid offering from New Belgium.

1554 pours a dark brown. This is an excellent brew with smooth maltiness with a hint of chocolate bite at the end. A dry and smooth beer. Very good.

12oz bottle. Interesting body - seemingly opaque buy strangely transparent. Aroma of berries and malt. Good sweet flavor, not overrun by either the dark malt or blackberry tones. Whereas some of NBs beers are starting to taste similar and blandish, the 1554 stands out as a good selection.

One of the three offerings from NB that actually make it to Minnesota. I like this beer better than Fat Tire. It has a nice savory smooth flavor of malt with some hops.

Sample from bottle at West Lakeview Liquors, Chicago with rep. Dark brown with ruby color, medium brown head. Fruity dark malt, some hop spice. Grainy fruity malt, red apple, not bad, subtle hop bitterness. Medium to full body, good carb. Okay. Once again, I rated this higher than I actually liked it.

Excellent beer. Very smooth and chocolaty, a little nutty in the aftertaste. Mild and pleasant taste, not very complex.

(Bottle (best before 2/22/08) via trade with <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?UserID=9357 target=blank>BeerandBlues2, thanks Brad!) Not too complex but quite tasty...Pours very dark brown with some garnet highlights. One and a half fingers of soft khaki head. Aroma of coffee, dark chocolate and perhaps licorice. Mouthfeel a bit thin, soft, fairly smooth, very lightly prickly. Heavy sheets of lacing inside of glass. Flavor is like a dark baker’s chocolate, very little sweetness, with perhaps a note of licorice or a slight dark spice element. Slightly nutty. Nice flavor and texture. As others have said this is similar to a schwarzbier. Have been wanting to try this for some time and wasn’t disappointed.

Thanks to beerandblues for this one. Surprisingly enjoyable. Big wafting aromas I can smell from a foot away of smoky maltiness. Flavor is slightly fruity with some chocolate. Creamy texture. I’m also getting some roasted malt in the flavor as well. Very reminiscent of a light quad type beer which would make sense considering the old begian heritage of the recipe supposedly.
