Commercial Description:
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Tap, No real head. Light raisin, some plum and thin chocolate in the nose. Nearly nothing in the mouth. Faint flavor. Expected more from this beer, could be better.

Dark brown with red hue and small tan head. Simple light roasty aroma with traces of dark fruits. Flavor is sweet and roasty with some nice earthy notes and some light fruit too. Finishes with a mix of crisp and roasty. Way better than Fat Tire.

Being used to Flat Tire, I avoided this for some years, but recently tried it and was very impressed. It is dark, deep red brown with a thick, long-lasting light tan head leaving good, lasting lacing. The aroma is sweet earth, like rich, damp soil and leaves, with a fruity element. The taste is also primarily a sweet, full earthiness with a toasty hint of chocolate that fades soon to leave a pleasant, mild earthy aftertaste. The palate is thick and full. The result is tasty, rich and smoothly balanced.

Pours a very thin dark brown with a thin off white almost beige head. Nose of dark malts, dark chocolate but not very potent. Flavor is mostly dark roasted malt with some nice chocolate hints quite sweet with a good bitterness.

Had this beer on 3/10/1999. Color is a deep dark rich brown with light carbonation and a light head. Aroma is light but there is a sweet darkly roasted malt scent there. Taste is light, smooth and almost creamy. Starting with a medium body that goes down very smooth and easy with a light malt flavor. Finish has a creamy feel to it with a nice sweet roasted flavor and the lightest bitterness. Its a nice dark ale.

Pours dark brown (but not black, I can still see through it) with a red glow. Thin head and mild carbonation. Some burnt grain flavors, but also lots of toasted on the second sniff. Rich burnt flavors with a very quaffable body. Nice beer! Burnt flavors linger on the tongue for quite some time (this is a good thing).

Hints of raisin in the nose and mouth. Slightly flat in both flavor intensity and effervescence. Very smooth and drinkable, but I was left looking for more oomph... no complaints though.

Very nice- rich and tasty, but with it’s own flavor. Strikes a nice balance of chocolate/coffee/nutty flavors.
