Commercial Description:
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Roasted/Black Malt Aroma, Poured with a small tan head. Low head retention. Roasted malt flavor with a fair amount of chocolate. Perceived hop bitterness is low as most seems to come from the dark roasted grains. Balance is to very much to the malt. Body is Medium to Medium low. Overall it’s a enjoyable beer.

Let me start off by saying that I am not the biggest fan of Fat Tire. This is my second offering from this brewery and it surprised the hell out of me. Very dark brown in color, bordering on black with a thick and creamy white head. Perfectly roasted malt, rich milk chocolate, and dark dried fruit in the nose. Creamy texture yet well carbonated. A extremely well balanced brew with a nice clean, bittersweet finish. Great from start to finish.

Dark brown with creamy head. Roasted barley and slight chocolate aroma. Sweet milk chocolate with a mild roastiness to the taste and a fruity finish.

33cl bottle. Poured a very dark chocolate brown colour with a tan head. Some roasted malt and nut flavors. Nice and rather light body for a black ale.

Autumn Brew Review ’07
Aromas are of dark chocolate, caramel, and butterscotch. This has a creamy mouthfeel. Good starter beer for the event.

Poured dark, not quite opaque with a dense light tan head that stayed nicely on the walls of the glass. Roasted malt aroma with sweeter caramel and nutty notes. Round roasted character in the flavor with subtle bitterness. Finishes clean. Poured with big head but carbonation seems okay out of bottle.

Roasted malty aroma, sweet caramel notes. Foamy tan head and black body. Flavor is roasted malt, cooked vegetables, bitter sharpness with light sweet balance. Light on the palate, well carbonated with a moderate woody duration. Easy drinking. Not bad.
