Pours dark brown in color with a thin beige head. Aroma is kind of musty with some roasted malts, nuts and chocolate. Taste of toffee, malts and chocolate. The mouthfeel is medium in body with a sweet malty finish. MrRoss (617), Delta, British Columbia, Canada
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 16, 2009 A previously unknown beer to me. Poured a thumb-thick creamy tan head to cap a nearly black body. Aroma was mostly malt as was the flavour. Solid mouthfeel, and the finish gave up something darker - chocolate, perhaps? | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 12, 2009 Cola-rown pour with light brown head. Light roasted malt aroma. Roasted malt flavor, some nuttiness, little chocolate. Leaves a nice roasted malt aftertaste. mcferc4 (56), New Jersey, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 11, 2009 A deceptive brew -- looks like a stout or a porter, drinks like a full-bodied lager. Great, yeasty aroma. Sweet, caramel notes. Dig the cat who picked up "roasted nuts" down below, that’s pretty spot-on. Smooth, clean finish. Delicious. kosko20 (302), Bemidji, Minnesota, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 9, 2009 Nice pour...dark ruby with a thick light tan head and good lacing. Aroma is roasted and caramel malts. Flavor is bittersweet with a sweet aftertaste. Mouthfeel is slightly spicy with a medium body and good carbonation. Overall, a solid, easy drinker but not much depth. possumjc (99), Charleston - Mt Pleasant, South Carolina, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Jul 8, 2009 18 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown-black with a nice tan head. Nice semi-sweet chocolate is the dominant flavor. Dry finish. I really like this beer. The chocolate flavors are just right not too bitter, not too sweet. jhumphries69 (722), Tyrone, Georgia, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 11/20 | Jul 7, 2009 22oz bomber. Pours deep, clear reddish dark brown with a thick pillowy soft tan head that leaves a few thick ropes of lace. Aroma is surprisingly grainy and pilsner malty. There are some chocolate dark grain notes and a light fruitiness and strong nuttiness. Some light toffee and toasted bread linger in there, too. The flavor is grainy pilsner malt up-front with some toasty Munich malt and some residual sweetness. There is a thick toasted bread character throughout. Light spicy bitterness with light roasted grain and cocoa+toffee. The beer finishes somewhat dry but with a malt-sweet aftertaste - almost too sweet. A bit plain flavor and overall watered down. Some soft fruit esters and subtle banana emerge as it warms. Mouthfeel is spritzy and surprisingly velvety and full-bodied. Overall, not bad but quite plain and unbalanced on the sweet side. It needs a bit more hops - perhaps a slightly different specialty grain bill could add some much needed complexity. I do not feel "enlightened", and I highly doubt the historic accuracy of what this beer claims to be...
