COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Black Lager uses a lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Deep brown with almost no head. Suprisingly thin for such a dark beer. Chocolate and coffee malts, but overall the aroma is lacking. There’s nothing on the nose, even after warming it up a bit. In my mind it doesn’t justify the high ratings others have given.

Bottle. Pours a deep dark black with a thin off white head. Aroma of chocolate malt. Tastes like a porter but a lot lighter in the palate and stomach. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Dark pour with tan head. Smells of dark malts, chocolate and slight hops. Tastes of the same with a clean finish. Very good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Very good, balanced Schwartzbier. Not remarkably complex. Some coffee and chocolate. More lager than stout. Not quite as good as Sprechers.

Bottle. Nice black lager with almost a stout feel. Good consistent beer. The New Belgium brewery has done a excellent job bring craft beer to large markets. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Not bad, really just tastes like a schwazbier. Some roast malt here and a light note of dark chocolate. Pours black with ok head and lacing. Finishes crisp with a light dose of bitterness. Bottle.

New Belgium always gets it right. This reminds me of a chocolate stout which I usually can stand after 3 sips, but this beer is balanced rather then overpowering and syrup like. This beer is too sweet to drink with ribs , and to thick to drink golfing, but perfect with some salty popcorn around a fire.
