Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Black Lager uses a lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Bottle. Pours a deep black color with brown head. Low retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel chews, toasted granola, plums and mild cherry. The taste isn’t as intense as the aroma. Notes of red fruit, bitter chocolate and raisins. The body seems a bit low as if this beer was watered down.

355ml bottle in Brisbane. This one has big (lightly milky) chocolate malts on the nose and tongue with a medium smooth palate and sweet biscuity finish. It’s all about the malts for this beer. Goes down easily with a lightish carbonation. Pours deep red-brown with a decent-sized foamy beige-coloured head.

Delicious! Possibly the best black lager I have tried. Goes well on a warm fall day into a cool fall night. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Originally rated on 1/10/08. Pours a nice very dark brown/ black body, the taste was a little toasty, with subtle hints of chocolate. Smooth and a little sweet,it is a little watery though. it still is a really good beer.

A roasty caramel aroma with a hint of coffee. Totally dark as a black lager should be. Minimal head. Heavy, coffee-ish taste with a hint of chocolate perhaps. While not at the top of its class, (Shiner Black Lager out-does it) it is nevertheless worth a quaff.
