Commercial Description:
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Pours a dark brownish black colour with a thick creamy tan head. Aroma is nutty, coffee , tofee and caramel notes. Flavors are generous of wheat, grass, dark fruits and black licorice. Nice brew, very filling- definately want to try this again soon.

Bottle. Pours somewhere between garnet and black with a big beige head. The aroma is bitter chocolate, a bit of roasted barley, and a hint of sour fruit (lime?!). The flavor has a bit of bite at first, I guess that "zesty acidity" in the commercial description. But it mellows quickly to an earthy, toasty taste with a touch of cold coffee and maybe some bark. The finish is clean, but just a bit vegetal. Nice subtle roasty aftertaste.

A pretty tasty ale. Fairly thin but enjoyable. Love these beers from New Belgium Brewing Company.

Lovely pour to black translucency, with a creamy, grayish-tan head that retains well and boasts wonderful, sticky, cascading lace. Aroma allures with mild dark chocolate, espresso grinds, mocha beans and turtle fudge. Dry, lactic aromatic elements prevail with an unsweetened cocoa edge and a hint of permanent marker. Tasty approach rolls out semi-bittersweet chocolate, which then teams with uppity effervescence. Cool mocha coolers emulate mild coffee bitterness and milk chocolatey traits (along with a lactic overturn as well.) Slightly burnt Tollhouse morsels hug the tongue on the backend. Effervescence turns over to a whole mouth flavor experience and is fairly dry on its way out. Dark chocolate melt-aways come through in the finish, along with a subtle slip of espresso beans and toffee. Thanks to RooftopRogue for the bottle!

Clear dark reddish brown, moderate head with decent lacing and retention. Aroma is light chocolate, darker fruits, caramel. Medium to light body, dry finish. Nothing Belgian about it though.

This poured a black color with a moderate beige head. The aroma contains a bit of chocolate and also some coffee and caramel. The flavor contains chocolate, dark fruit, and coffee. The beer has a slight sour presence. It has a creamy texture to it but the mouthfeel is slightly thin. Overall this is a nice beer.
