Commercial Description:
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Dark, dark red with a rich and frothy head. Tart aroma with a malt and caramel aroma. Earthy in flavor with a unique toasted grain finish. Nice body. Well made.

Chestnut colored, redder at the bottom, with a small, whispy head that is mostly diminishing. Nose is grainy - husky wheat - with bittersweet cocoa, earth, and mild roast. Moderately sweet flavor up front - brown sugar and rye - turning somewhat grainier though some molasses and berry (almost like a sugared cranberry) pops in and out through the flavor profile. In further sips, the earthy, dirty hops are more noticeable. Chewey grain, slightly sour finish. Interesting.

Bottle thanks to a friend bringing them back to me from Colorado. Pours a black color with a small head. Flavor is caramel, very woody, and malty. Not very hoppy, and not a lot of hop bitterness. Overall this beer is very drinkable and quite tasty!

Red brown body with a creamy beige head; Quite big strangely composed biscuit like nose; Soft texture on fruity sweet body, slightly cloying; Medium long earthy chocolate thick finish, cocoa bean aroma, to sweet and a little to cloying. VERY strange!

Sample from bottle at West Lakeview Liquors, Chicago with rep. Dark brown with ruby color, medium brown head. Fruity dark malt, some hop spice. Grainy fruity malt, red apple, not bad, subtle hop bitterness. Medium to full body, good carb. Okay. Once again, I rated this higher than I actually liked it.

Re-Rate, on tap at the brewery: Beer pours dark brown mahogeny color with a well retained beige colored head. Aroma is pretty strong sweet malt with lots of roastiness and a bit of chocolate. Flavor is quite roasty. Finish is a touch dry with a hint of hops. Nice beer.

Bottle. Dark brown, ruby around the edges, and a beige head. Nice chocolate aroma with roasted / toasted caramel malts. Flavor is the same, somewhat like a vienna, but sweeter and fuller, slightly smoked, with sweet chocolate in the finish. Wet / sticky mouthfeel, but I like it.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy dark brown with a thin beige head. Grainy malt aroma with caramel and a hint of chocolate. Caramel malt flavor with a bit of hop in the finish.
