COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Black Lager uses a lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Appearance: very deep amber color, almost black, has a smaller dark tan head that fades quickly Aroma: chocolate, wheat, coffee, Taste: coffee, wheat, Palate: highly carbonated, leaves a bit of a coffee aftertaste Overall: not very complex to me, coffee overpowers the taste buds and that's the main taste I'm getting, still it's not so potent that it's undrinkable ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from GBBF 2014 and drunk at home. Black beer with lasting dark beige head. Chocolate dunkel lager aroma. Tasty as hell. Tasty fresh some milky chocolate with a fresh lager hop finish. It’s a pleasingly tasty dunkel. Not a huge depth, but the flavours work well. The hops are quite dominant especially on the finish, more so than you would get on a typical German dunkel. It’s good though. Very drinkable and yet very interesting and has layers of flavour at the same time. I liked it very much.
