COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Black Lager uses a lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Very nice beer. Looks like a stout, but this is a different animal. Very earthy and slightly sweet with plenty of coffee and chocolate, with a grounding of pumpernickel bread. Just think of the best "brown foods" combined into a delicous smooth beer. Lovely.

From can around room temperature. Pours dark Amber brown. Thick tan head. Inviting chocolatey and toasted aroma. Hint of smoke in aroma and flavor. Rich malty, chocolate and smoke flavor. Smooth and creamy but not too heavy. Even at what is probably a bit warmer than it should be it still held up really well (went from open shelf in store to glass at home). ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pleasant, mellow malty profile, toffeeish, lightly roasty and sweet, with hints of molasses and bread, but with a very drinkable consistency. Needs to be a little warmer than most people realize for maximum flavor, though.

It pours with a tan head and dark amber in color. It has a smoky, chocolate aroma. There are also some basement aromas present as well. It has well defined smoke, chocolate flavors. It is mostly smooth on the palate.

Toasty and chocolaty with a rich smooth flavor. It’s classed a dunkel but flavor wise leans to stout or porter. Very enjoyable beer.

Bottle. This one holds a special place in my heart as it was a college graduation beer in 2006. A: Mahogany with an off-white head. N: Cocoa, coffee, char, and toast. Biscuit and a hint of vanilla. T: Very clean sweetness. Coffee bitterness. M: Light body, fizzy carbonation, no alcohol presence. O: A flavorful, clean lager with an appreciable ’stout’ quality. Compares favorably with Heater Allen Schwarzbier.

Bottle, pours black with a hint of red. Thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malt continues thru to palate along with chocolate. Have had this on several occasions, every time I'm glad I did. Putting this on my favorites list. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A perennial good drink for the fall and winter months. Pours a nice smooth dark from the bottle. Consistent black lager taste but leaves the palate a little late in my opinion ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Very special beer. 1554 is a black lager that is very smooth and has a great finish. Love the aroma as well.
