Dynamind69 (29), San Miguel, California, USA Apr 30, 2007 This is the perfect dark ale,I have finally found a great ale, with mild hops.It is not too bitter, the sweet malts are perfect. This is the best dark ale I have ever had and I will make my primary daily drinker.I liked everything about it. Perfect! I like this brew better than fat tire. Its the best tasting beer in the world ,I love it. Fattimus (3), Sedalia, Missouri, USA does not count Feb 26, 2007 Dark reddish brown; near black, body with very light aroma of chocolate and coffee. Initial zesty acidic flavor with surprisingly clean, refreshing finish. My all-time personal favorite. targhee (24), Boulder, Colorado, USA Aug 6, 2006 New Belgium is onto something with the 1554. A dark beer that you can drink even when it is 100 F. Wonderful mouth feel, a hint of chocolate sweetness, fantastic! lowry99 (14), USA Mar 5, 2008 My favorite black ale. Weyerbacher’s Black Hole aspires to this but misses the light touch and winds up too cough-syrupy. 1554 can be guzzled or sipped non-stop, in a word: drinkable. Also, has a bit of alcohol sting on top so you don’t notice the low content. MCSNWV (3), Clarksburg, West Virginia, USA does not count Oct 29, 2009 A wonderful deep mahogany Ale. Has a creamy light tan head. Tastes sweet with subtle Carmel and chocolate undertones
The aroma is similar to the taste.
Comes in a bottle, best from tap. currently my Favorite Beer. stison42 (318), Blacksburg, Virginia, USA May 29, 2006 Updated: Jan 22, 2007Black. Heavy but smooth with a good hearty aftertaste. Full flavored and wonderfull. Tastes amazingly the same from the bottle or tap. mattcolo99 (27), USA Oct 28, 2001 Very nice...It’s fruity and sweet but a beautiful body. New Belgium hits a homer again. BarePaw (148), Pullman, Washington, USA Sep 16, 2003 When poured, this beer makes a decent head, and has a dark color. The aroma is pleasant. It is very smooth and feels nice on the palate. It has a wonderful sweet, malty flavor. This is a definite must.
