Commercial Description:
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

This one did kind of take me back to 1554. A very good ale, powerful flavor, it made its presence. And also a nice cho-coffe flavor to it.

Dark brown, very close to black, light brown head. . . huge nutty malt aroma. Good flavour, slightly smokey, lots of nuts, good bitter hops on the back of the tongue and a roasted finish.

Draught and bottle sampled. Dark, frothy beige head and ruby-brown body. Aroma of toasted malts, nuts, and all-spice. Flavor also of nuts, malts, and some maple. Medium-bodied with a smooth mouthfeel and decent carbonation.

Dark German malt grain aroma, with a little molassas, taste is smooth dark malt with carmelly maybe a bit buttery palate, smooth and tastey in a dark way, which it would have had a bit more finish, but very enjoyable

22 oz bottle labeled "Enlightened Black Ale" pours dark, with red hue through back lighting and a non-sustaining head with lingering lace. Aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, sweetness. The flavor is solidly malty, with a roasted character, slightly lactic, very slightly sour, and actually quite nice. Palate is smooth and carbonated, quite refreshing. Overall this is nice. I’m glad I tried it.

bottle...Dark brown/mahogany pour with medium beige head that disappeared fast. Very fragrant. Musty, yeasty aroma. Complex flavors, reminds me of an English Strong Ale. Musty, earthy flavors, some burnt malt type flavors also, without the bitterness. Nice mouthfeel, a little oily. I like this beer a lot.
