Commercial Description:
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale uses a light lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

Dark brown in color with a off white head that diminishes quickly. aroma is pretty malty with caramel, some light licorice, grain, fruit, some light earthy hops. Taste his malty, very light dry chocolate hints, some fruit, some malty sweetness with a very light hop bitterness in the finish. medium bodied.

Dark brown to black color, creamy lively head, smooth caramel and roasted flavors with very little burnt after-flavor. Matches perfectly with spicy Indian food. Good body, good balance.

Had high hopes for this one but was a bit dissapointed. Pours an extremely dark amber brown with large bubbly foamy mainalla head. Aroma is sweet with dark cherries and slight roastines - not very apetizing. Flvor is extremely light and a bit watery - slightly sweet with a bit of a cardboardy flavor. Overall, just so so.

Poured from 12oz. into a New Belgium chalice, that nifty new one. Dark brown with foamy light tan head. Aromas of chocolate malt and raisins a bit of citrus. Mildly sweet to the taste with a hint of bitterness and a good aftertaste that lingers in the mouth. Darn good, I think it is one of their best beers.

Dark brown color in the glass. Mostly malt flavors with toast and chocolate notes and an almost earthy character to the beer.

Dark, nice with little sense of hoppiness. Dry, mild and satisfying with a taste that doesn’t linger. I’d drink it again.

Pours dark, clear amber with a small but fluffy, khaki head. The aroma is of toast, cherries and berries. Mild spices. The flavor is the same with a bit more fruitiness. Orange, banana, and a hint of chocolate. Very light on the palate, borderline watery with a toasted almost roasted/smoky finish. Kind of strange, but pretty good.

How the hell have I not rated this?! On bottle and tap numerous times the past few years. Had it on tap for apres ski in Steamboat just recently. Clear, dark brown color with black center. Decent creme-colored head with a light aroma of smoke and charred malt. Flavor is simple, with toasted malt and dry dark chocolate. Finishes smooth and easy, with a light body. A consistently good beer from New Belgium.

12 oz. -> snifter. Poured a very dark brown, with subtle red undertones; an off-white head, which dissipated; subtle lacing. Smells of that classic New Belgium cereal smell, roasted and caramel-y, with a very, very slight sourness. Tastes of coffee; cereal; grasses or hay; and dark, overly ripe fruit. Mouth feel is dry, almost powdery (?!). A fine beer for drinking while - or rather in place of - studying for law school finals. Ah, priorities....
