COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Black Lager uses a lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

light roast aroma with sweet caramel. Brown pour with a tan head. Lots of malt in the flavor and light on the palate.

A perennial good drink for the fall and winter months. Pours a nice smooth dark from the bottle. Consistent black lager taste but leaves the palate a little late in my opinion ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Very special beer. 1554 is a black lager that is very smooth and has a great finish. Love the aroma as well.

"looks and tastes more like a robust brown, porter, or most closely-a black lager. full flavored, but not overpowering on the belgian yeast strain. just a hint of spice in there with all the roasted malty flavors. good beer."

12 oz bottle at home. Pours with just a few bubbles, moderate lacing. Gorgeous dark color; hints of deep burgundy and caramel dominate. Aroma is somewhat faint, but lager-like. Yeasty, some roasted malt, bright red fruit. Tasty and bright flavors that jump on the finish. Light chocolate bready malt flavors dominate. There’s just a hint of raspberry or red currants in there, too, which brightens it up. A little citrusy. A bit of yeast on the finish. Nice palate that develops from smooth to crisp rapidly. Overall very nice for the style. Normally I’m not into New Belgium but I really enjoyed this one.

I had this at Global Brew. Pours black with a tan head. Taste chocolate, sweet, caramel. I thought this was good. I could drink this again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from GBBF 2014. Poured a clear, dark ruby with a thin, off white head. Aroma of chocolate, rye bread and Oxo meatiness. Sweet fruit flavours, with cake and lager malt notes. Bitter dark chocolate in the finish, with some treacle and roasted malt. Different.

Poured from a 12oz bottle tasted of chocolate and caramel...a thicker and more refined taste than the Shiner

Aroma is a breadiness, dark roasted malts and slight fragrant hops. Taste is a very well balanced malt/hop profile. Malts are sweet and roasty yet finishes very smoothly. Light hints of toffee and dark chocolate and coffee. Appearance is a clear dark amber with a thin pearl head that retains fairly poorly.
