Born of a flood and centuries-old Belgian text, 1554 Black Lager uses a lager yeast strain and dark chocolaty malts to redefine what dark beer can be. In 1997, a Fort Collins flood destroyed the original recipe our researcher, Phil Benstein, found in the library. So Phil and brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert, traveled to Belgium to retrieve this unique style lost to the ages. Their first challenge was deciphering antiquated script and outdated units of measurement, but trial and error (and many months of in-house sampling) culminated in 1554, a highly quaffable dark beer with a moderate body and mouthfeel.

UPDATED: AUG 17, 2011 Bottle. The pour was a deep rich black with a reddish hue, it had a small creamy off-white head that dissipated almost fully although it did have some fair lacing. The aroma was heavy of roasted chocolate malts a light sweet doughy yeast and a touch of resin hops with a hint of caramel and smidgen of coffee. It tasted slightly sweet with a nice hint of chocolate in the beginning and finished with a nice bitter sweet flavor that had hints of chocolate, caramel and an had an ever so slight presence of dried fruit and hops at the end with the flavor fading quite fast. Mouthfeel was medium to full in body with the texture being very creamy at first then becoming mildly dry with a flat carbonation. Overall a very tasty brew, great for sitting around a fire on a cold night or having with dessert after dinner.

12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured in a reddish shade of dark brown, off white head, no real lacing on the glass. Roasted malts and some coffee on the nose. Taste is consistent, roast malts, a bit of smoke, some caramel, coffee notes. Very nice beer, tasty and quite enjoyable.

Bottle: Very dark brown, hints of ruby with a lasting, creamy tan head. Moderate lacing. Aroma of toasted caramel malts, mild grape sweetness, bread, yeast, a touch of roasted grains. Flavor exhibits a mild vinous character; grape skins & mild alcohol. Notes of toasted bread, dry caramel malt, cocoa dust, a bit of unsweet chocolate in the finish. Notable hopping with a leafy & ashy character, slight bitterness. Faint clove in the aftertaste, Belgian yeast esters coming alive. Not bad for what it is, blurring the style guidelines a bit.
