Bottle. Poured dark brown with tall still head. Nutty aroma with a hint of apple spices and cloves. Sweet bready taste. Slight bitterness keeps it light tasting. Medium dry finish. Light body and texture. Med/low carbonation. An enjoyable and different brown ale.

Great balance. Mild to the nose. Not too sweet, yet very smooth and easy to drink. Nice blend of flavors with a nice Smokey and woody finish. Very little taste of alcohol and minimal hop presence. I can easily enjoy several of these in a sitting. My favorite from this brewer.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured a deep dark brown with a slight head which disappeared quickly. Aroma of chocolate and coffee. Taste was a smooth coffee with a touch of grape and a thin mouthfeel and quickly dissipating into a touch of alchohol coming through.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours dark brown with tan head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is lightly toasted malt, caramel and chocolate. Taste is like a light porter, with the flavor one notch less than the aroma. Flavors of smoky, woody malts and some cocoa. Starts strong and finishes light. A stepping stone to the more robust porter style.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
This is probably my 2nd favorite brew from New Belgium, behind their Abbey Ale. Pours a dark brownish that looks reddish in the light. I think itís beautiful. The aroma is smoky, burnt coffee. The flavor is somewhat unique. It tastes like a porter, but itís lighter and dryer. Understated might be the best description. It might make a good intro beer for people who havenít yet acquired a taste for robust porters. Overall a very good beer.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Dark brown coloured body with a very light copper glow at the bottom - a very nice gradient to the beer and a thinnish, one centimetre tall tan head - nice look. Aroma of slightly toasted malt, some raisin, prune and earthy notes and a hint of caramel and metal in the nose as well. Medium-bodied; Assertive peat and slightly smoked flavours with a bit of lactic sugar, some minor maltiness and a definite pale character. Aftertaste shows a very mild finish with the caramelised sugars standing out the most along with a hint of milk and some light smoked flavours. Overall, a decent beer for sure, but nothing amazing or spectacular. The story is neat and that is just about the best thing regarding this beer. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased and given to me by my brother-in-law from Harris Teeter in Raleigh, North Carolina sampled at home in Washington on 30-May-2013.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
A dark ale with a thin foamy head. Malty with hints of chocolate. Subtle and not very bold. A pleasant drink, but forgettable.
