Commercial Description:
Abbey Grand Cru is a richer version of our Abbey, a Belgian "Double" style ale. It is brown in color, with a full body and a distinctive fruity aroma. Abbey Grand Cru is fermented with an authentic Belgian yeast strain, and is refermented in the bottle to produce natural carbonation. The beer should be served cool (not cold) to best experience the rich aroma and complex flavors. Abbey Grand Cru will continue to improve and age gracefully for several years, if stored in a cool dark cellar.

2002 bottle. Head is initially average sized, fizzy, light brown, fully diminishing. Body is clear dark orange-brown. Aroma is moderately malty (cookie), lightly hoppy (flowers), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of bubble gum, alcohol, orange, and toffee. Flavor is heavily sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, fizzy carbonation, lightly alcoholic. This sample had nary a speck of yeast despite the brewery claiming it's still bottle conditioned. The alcohol is a bit too apparent in the aroma, fizzy watery body, quickly dying head, this just isn't doing anything for me. The standard Abbey is better IMHO, at least this year.

Four year old bottle courtesy of Kansas New Belgium Rep, Scott Poure. Aroma is sweet dark fruits and toffee. Flavor is sweet and complex. Good banana and clove, perhaps pear. Alcohol is well hidden. Glad I finally got to try this, and if it was in production for retail, I would purchase this regularly.

I made the mistake of trying this when I toured the New Belgium brewery a while back. I say mistake because now it really bugs me that I can’t get it anywhere else. A lovely amber color and a thick, lasting head. Sweet, fruity aroma. Wonderfully complex flavor with hints of sweet fruit and clove spice. A great mix.

Fantastic beer, and a richer version of Abbey as the description tells you. 9.4% alcohol... Woooooo. If they sold this at the liquor stores I’d buy it all the time. It’s only available at the New Belgium Brewery, and make sure to give it a try if/when you go there.

Had this beer on 3/27/2001. Color is a deep amber with good carbonation and head. Aroma is a strong malt scent. Taste is sweet and rich. Starting with a medium body it goes down with a sharp rich feel. Finish is a rich sweet malt falvor with a shrap sweet end.
