TheEvilTwin (13), Texas, USA Aug 25, 2005 This review is for a 1996 Abbey Grand Cru. This beer was stored in a dark wine room at 75 degrees. This beer had a strong aroma of alcohol when poured in to the glass, however the aroma was deceiving. The Abbey poured a deep mahogany color with notes of raison and plum on the nose. The mouth feel was excellent leaving a lingering taste on the palate. This was a definite treat. Dougal (130), Escondido, California, USA Mar 30, 2003 Could it be that this is even better than the Double. YES! Much more malty and very yeasty. Sort of like a nice sourdough blended with a country brown bread. One of my favorite American Balgian offerings. Malty, malty, malty! lemonlovr (183), Lockport, Illinois, USA Oct 2, 2003 Had this on tap at the Falling Rock in Denver. Wonderful aroma of bananas and chocolate. The appearance is dark brown with a slight reddish tint. Flavor is also complicated: sweet banana fruitiness with a deeper chocolateness. Excellent mouthfeel that masks the alcohol content. Special note that this beer improved quite a bit once it warmed up to proper serving temperature. hoppygrrrl (104), Albion, Michigan, USA Jul 5, 2003 Gorgeous, clear amber color, and a fresh aroma of sweet yeast (what a scent! Beautiful!). Subtle, complex, malty, smooth, and sweet (I tasted a bit of candy). Truly exceptional! To be savoured. beerguy101 (3468), Newark, California, USA Sep 28, 2002 Medium copper color, large creamy head. Very rich malt taste. Very full rich flavor, expansive and fruity. Mouthfeel is very round, full and smooth. Good hop balance. Re-fermented in the bottle with Belgian yeasts, there is a near vinous like quality to this beer. Reminiscent of a Belgian Red. Very complex flavor, somewhat thick. High Alcohol? Finish is very smooth. Aftertaste is malty and sweet.
