COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

UPDATED: MAR 1, 2011 Tasted on tap at Sports Exchange in Old Town Fort Collins. Brown body with a creamy head. Aroma of sweet candy sugar. Very sweet body like a typical Abbey Dubbel but a bit lighter.

Pours deep, dark reddish brown. Earthy yet surprisingly sweet aroma. Flavor is yeast and spices, slightly sweet. Perhaps a bit of caramel. Finishes dry and sweet - also pleasingly bitter. A little bit of alcohol taste afterwards, but not unpleasant or overly strong. The flavor really stays with you afterwards. Outstanding brew. Definately need to at least try this once. Outstanding at it’s price and availability.

Pours dark ruby red with white head, aroma is some dark fruit, caramel and biscuit. Taste up front is caramel and molasses, leading into a touch of anise, with a sweet finish. Good, but lacking complexity.

White, creamy head. Medium-dark amber color. Wonderful bouquet aroma. Reminiscent of green apples and coffee grounds. Splashes the palate with equal complexity. Rich notes sit in the back of the mouth for a pleasant finish. A spectacular Belgian style ale.

Pours a deep amber with thin beige head. Good lacing throughout. Aroma of sweet toasted malts, a bit of smoke comes through as well. Familiar New Belgium aroma and taste in my opinion. You can definitely tell it is one of their products. Good offering.
