Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Pours a nice semi-clear dark amber with a THICK head. Aroma is incredibly rich: toffee, cinnamon, nutmeg. Other smells that I can’t quite describe. So far, this beer is amazing! Let’s see how it tastes. Flavor is toffee, vanilla, and carbon dioxide. It’s not bad, but not as rich as the aroma. Palate is about average; smooth, not particularly silky or anything. I think the carbonation gets in the way of the flavor a bit.

Candied mixed fruit nose with some baking spice, some dough and dust. Really dark reddish brown, almost opaque, lacing abounds after a nice 2 finger head. At first the beer had a metallic bite on the finish but that went away, I blame it on the carbonation, the beer was complete and not overly complex, a little more yeast balance would be nice. Overall, very nicely made brew at the right price, great intro to real belgian dubbels.

Pours brown with red to orange highlights and a moderate off-white head. Aroma is nice and fruity, bananas, apples some toast and caramel. Flavor fits the same description to me, but it’s smoothness stood out to me. Finish was pretty interesting, like it was some sort of earthy banana counterpart. Medium bodied, lightly textued for the style, but good and mostly authentic. You can’t find a better dubbel for the price that’s for damn sure!

Dark brown color with red highlights and a large slightly off-white head. Aroma is full of sweet banana and caramel with an element of spice. The flavor seems a bit thin at first after such a pleasant aroma. Fizzy mouthfeel. Enjoyable enough.

A good, solid Belgian brew. Pours with a nice white head, and nice dark golden brown color. The taste is acceptable, but even as it warms it seems a little too sweet/fruity. I like it, but perhaps I am tiring of Belgians.

The beer pours red amber with an organy white head. The is yeast, malt and light notes of burnt sugar. The taste lacks depth but has richness; I get lots of sweet caramel, yeast light citrus and spice. The finish is nice and dry. My favorite beer buy NB so far.

Large white, open head sits atop a deep, rich brown and red liquid. Alcohol, malt and mincemeat aroma. Nice effervescent finish with malt, yeast and bitter fruit overtones.. Nice brew from a 12 oz boittle\!
