COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

I had this at the brewery for the first time. The flavor of malt and fruit was a perfect balance. I wish they served me more of this brew. I recommend this one and will buy this at the store in the future

Poured a medium brown, nose was spicy with yeast phenols, taste was a tad painful, sharp, odd moldy-like sweetness.

if you close your eyes and don’t know that you’re drinking a beer that wasn’t brewed in Belgium, you’d swear it was. Very pleasant aroma of dark fruits and yeast that follows through in the flavor. This is a very good beer, and at 7% alcohol, is very comparable to some of the more expensive belgian brews.

UPDATED: JUN 28, 2011 Deep, rustic copper, with thin lacing head. Smelled of bubblegum, raisin, maybe some plums as well. Taste was heavy on the dark fruits and light funky yeast esters. Some blueberry also noticeable. Assertive and full of dark ripe fruits, but no one flavor really stands out. Good, but not great.

Red brown in color... Aroma of caramel malts, candi sugar, Belgian yeast... Flavor is crisp, slightly citrusy, sweet from candi sugars and caramel malt... Slightly yeasty finish, hint of banana... Delicious

Delicious, aroma is nutty and taste is very sweet bread. I think I may even like it better than their Trippel (better go back and see how I rated that).

UPDATED: DEC 20, 2010 Consumed with Travlr in Tucson. Nice sweet caramel smell that translates into the same in the first sip. Nice complement to the subtle hops flavor. A nice beer to intro new styles.
