Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Bottle (12oz). Shared by blankboy with garthicus. Clear ruby-amber with a small wispy beige head. Aroma of banana, cloves, sweet caramel malt, sweet yeast and a hint of spoiled milk. Taste follows, softer, no milk, with peach and apple, slightly dry spice - really smooth. Average lightly syrupy body, spicy and a hint of alcohol in the finish. Really dig the taste.

Pours a very dark clear amber with a small beige froth on top. Sweet caramel apple, raisin and grape aroma, tootsie roll, belgian yeast. Very straight forward flavor, almost like a doppelbock. Rich dark malt flavor, some grape and raisins. Sweet caramel apple finish with a touch of yeast. Medium body, watery, light carbonation, slightly syrupy.

12 oz bottle from lb4lb, thanks Deniz. Pours a deep mahogany, so what if I took that description from the label it’s pretty acurate, with an average size foamy light beige head. Aroma of toffee, raisin, bread and plums. Medium bodied with average carbonation and a creamy finish. Flavor is actually a step down from the aroma with lots of yeast, grainy malts and only slight fruitiness present. An average beer for an average beer drinker.

Pours a dark brown with a thin tan head. Nice aroma of cloves, fruit, and the usual yeast smell. Actually had some nice flavor to it as well. A little bit of a bitter aftertaste. Nice banana flavor. I liked it more than I thought I would.

I was actually sort of disappointed with this upon first inspection. Aroma wasn’t quite as hefty as I expected, though there was a nice hint of vanilla in there. First taste is sharp but a smooth vanilla caramel round body with a slight hint of oakiness going into a slight alcohol warming.

One of my first dubels. Odor just as everyone else here describes. I started off with it a bit to cold and had to let it warm. Flavors really started to pop!

Pours a clear, brownish amber color with an off-white head. Awesome aroma, bananas, cloves, yeasts... it’s all there. Malty body, yeasty, bread, maybe a hint of dark fruit. Not a bad attempt at a dubbel.
