Commercial Description:
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

On tap at the brewery. Poured a deep brown color with a light beige head. Aroma of some fruits, mostly banana, and bubble gum. Malty entry with some caramel leads into a yeasty middle with hints of fruity esters such as banana and a soft bubble gum finish. Unfortunately, this is a below-average beer now, but it used to be much better, and devoid of the over-whelming bubble gum notes.

This was my first foray into Belgian-style ales. At first I tasted a coffee background and it wasn’t too bad. Then as I drank on the maltiness and "cheeky" ale flavor started to annoy me. Before long I said, "No thanks" and returned to my lagers. You Ale People can have your ales. I’m going to continue to sample them, but I am a pale lager person except for German Hefeweizens. The NBS crowd that likes to over-analyze and over-describe beer with countless inane comparisons to fruit can have it.

Clear amber body, medium sized beige head; Very pleasant fresh nose, soft licorice spicy, very nice but a little to small; Very pleasant fresh bitter sweet balanced body, big soft carbonation, very good, very drinkable, but to small; To short finish all the right feels and all the right aromas, just not enough of it. Very nice, very drinkable and actually very good, but for a BE abbey dubble it is way to small.

on tap @ papago. clear? dark amber with a rich off white head. aroma is candi...bubblegum, yeast and some sweet dark malts. medium bodied and on the creamy side from the carbonation. flavor is caramel burnt raisins, malt, wood, clove, cinnamon, yeast and alcohol (which gets pungent as it warms). spicy dry finish with lingering notes of bananas... 7/3/7/3/15/3.5

second time around on tap... very distinct nail polish aroma is quite offensive. dry throughout with an almost ’dead’ flavor profile and a very tart finish. soft creamy carbonation leaves a pleasant mouth feel. 5/3/6/3/12/2.9

Dark brownish/amber color, somewhat translucent...pretty large frothy head that faded Really great fruity/belgian yeasty/candy/bubble gum aroma with a touch of some caramel and light spiciness. I definitely recognize the yeast (from other beers) even in the aroma. The flavors are similarly fruity, loads of dried dark fruit (dates, cherries, raisins), caramel, candy sugar, a touch of bitterness and a very slight alcohol warmth. Nice rich silky sugary mouthfeel which I like, but it was somewhat thin. But extremely easy to drink. And the fact that it was $5.99 for a 6 pack makes it awesome. Not the greatest dubbel ever but damn good for the price and for the fact that it comes IN A SIX PACK... I’ll definitely buy more of these.

Pours a deep amber-brown color into the glass with an off white head. Taste is sweet and sugary, with slight fruit flavors as well. 12 oz. bottle.

A brown/copper colored ale. Has a big head that takes a while to go away. The aroma is very sweet like Belgian sugar. The conistency is thick like syrup. The flavor is outstanding. Crisp, sweet, and refreshing with hints of citrus.
