COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winner of four World Beer Cup medals and eight medals at the Great American Beer Fest, Abbey Belgian Ale is the Mark Spitz of New Belgium’s lineup - but it didn’t start out that way. When Jeff and Kim first sampled the beer at the Lyons Folks Fest, reviews were mixed at best. One of founder Jeff’s first two Belgian style homebrews (along with Fat Tire), Abbey is a Belgian dubbel (or double) brewed with six different malts and an authentic Belgian yeast strain. Abbey is bottle-conditioned, weighs in at 7.0% alcohol by volume, and pairs well with chocolate (or boldly served by itself) for dessert.

Pretty flat as far as a Belgian...a bit watery and little of the sweetness and none of the crisp associated with a good Abbey Dubbel. No head, that should have tipped me off. Malty predominantly. Would not recommend except for beginners.

12oz bottle at Shellfish in Port Lavaca, TX. Pours deep mahogany with a thick, long lasting white head. Nice amount of lacing. Aroma is caramel malt, brown sugar, dark fruits and yeast. Very pleasant and sweet. Light body for abbey, with yeast and dark fruit dominate the mouth, some caramel malt as well. Finish is short and sweet though not cloying. Very simplistic interpretation of the style.

This is my go-too. Maybe the best Abbey for the money. Good fruity aroma. Flavor is very traditional-Abbey, but nothing too crazy. I haven’t found a better, more affordable Belguim Abbey. It’s made in the U.S.A.?!! Superb!

pours dark amber with a thick off white head. Aroma is caramel and biscuity malt tones. some dark fruits and candy like belgian yeastiness. Flavour is caramel/toffee maltiness, quite sweet though not cloying. Balancing slightly tart fruitiness and some candy sugar sweetness that lingers in the finish.

12oz bottle. Filtered caramel amber-brown color. Big fluffy head. Sweet malty aroma, with some fruity nuances. Lots of caramel medium malt tones, with some solid yeasty fruitiness as well. Very fresh, clean mouthfeel, a lot more authentic tasting than your typical US version. Quite a solid beer.

UPDATED: DEC 9, 2010 Pour is dark brown with a generous head. Notes of banana, other fruits, and snack cakes. Tastes very good for an Abbey Dubbel from the new world. Must admit that it is definitely not my favorite style. But this is really solid. Not heavy at all. Very drinkable. Maybe even sessionable.

bottle received as an extra in a trade. Pours a clear, brownish-red with a big, off-white head. Nice lacing. Nose is of bubblegum. Taste is the same as aroma. Mouthfeel is creamy and carbonated.

12oz bottle. Pours a medium tea-brown color; off-white head with ok retention and solid, fine-bubbled lacing. Aroma shows a strong clove note first and foremost, with a chewy banana / Belgian ester core below; a well-balanced, generous approach. Nice, approachable levels of carbonation on this one. Medium mouthfeel: cloves and sweet Belgian esters again serve as the central point here: crackers, brown sugar, and a permeating banana character; a really nicely balanced, solid dubbel, if a touch straightforward: there’s nothing denser underneath (or maybe there is, with a bit of vanilla and maple syrup; quite soft), but I could drinks loads of this. Nicely drinkable rendition. Lasting finish of breadiness, clove, and lightly toasted malts; well-balanced end.
